Biografi

Hans flotta for även upp längs Schelde mot Ghent. Året därpå for han upp längs Seine. Denna pattställning varade under hela vintern.

Biography

Name(s)

Godefrid/Godefred and/or Godfred/Godfrid Haraldsson, possibly also Gudfred. He does not seem to have a byname.

In Annales Bertiniani he is called "Godefridus, Herioldi Dani filius" and in Annales Fuldenses "Nordmanni Godafredo duce" and his death recorded in Annales Vedastini name him "Godefridus Danus".

According to earlier biography; Alternate spelling include Gudfred, Godfred, Göttrick (German), Gøtrik (Danish), Gudrød (Danish), and Godofredus (Latin).

Birth and Christening

According to earlier biography his birth date is given as; abt. 852, and : Christening: 24 Jun 0826 Stift St. Alban vor Mainz.

According to English Wikipedia he was baptized in 826, together with his parents, in Mainz in the Frankish Empire, with crown prince Lothair I as a godparent.

Parents

His father was named Harald.

English Wikipedia suggest that this Harald was the same as the one known as Harald Klak, son of Halfdan.

Wife and children

MedLands mention one wife and one child, a daughter names Reinhild.[1] He supposedly married Gisela around 882, an illegitimate daughter of Lotharire II, King of Lotharingia, and his mistress Waldrada.

Regino records the marriage in 882 of "Gisla filia Hlotharii" and "rex Godofridus Nordmannorum".
The Annales Fuldenses record the marriage of "Gotafrid Nordmannus qui superiore anno fuerat baptizatus" and "Hugone Hlutharii filio eiusque sororem" in 883.
The Annales Vedastini record the marriage in 882 between "Godefridus…rex" and "Gislam filiam Hlotharii regis".

His supposed daughter Reinhild;

The wife of Theoderich is named "Reinhildam, Danorum Fresonumque germine procreatam" in the Vita Mathildis Reginæ. However, a better fit for the wife of Theoderich may be Regenlind, sister of Bovo Bishop of Chalons.
According to Europäische Stammtafeln, she was the daughter of Duke Godefrid & his wife Gisela [Carolingian], which is presumably a guess based on this description in the Vita Mathildis.

Death and burial

According to earlier info in this profile;

Death: Date: 885, (-killed in battle 854).

Medlands refers to information from "Annales Vedastini 885, MGH SS I, p. 522" that states; "Godefridus Danus was killed in the city of "Gerulfi sui fidelis" by "Heinrico duce" in 885".[2]

This source identifies this Godefrid, husband of Gisela of Lorraine, as the son of Hálfdan Guðröðarson and Thora Haraldsdatter (daughter of King Harald Goldbeard). http://www.faroeiceland.ca/html/ghtout/gp4418.html

This profile mixes to 2 different Godefrids. One should be the son of Halfdan,[1] and the other Harold "Klak".[2]

I was not the one who added the disputed template here, but now that you ask, I do notice that all the sources listed are other genealogies, so perhaps we should provide some primary sources to confirm he is a real person.

What is the reason for using the "disputed existence" template please?
