Biography

My (NOT SO ) Great Grandfather, William Carnes Hall (WCH) was a deadbeat dad, a killer, a spoiled brat. His wife Mary Augusta Bolton and older children were living on a small farm near Huntland TN, purchased by her father, Samuel J. Bolton, when he killed a man in New Orleans LA during an argument at work. I was told this by my grandfather Estell Baucom whose wife was Bennie Eliza Hall, daughter of WCH. Later I was given a box of items by a daughter of Bennie's brother Tom Hall, that included a New Orleans newspaper account of the killing and letters that Mary received with money from her father and brothers. After WCH went through his widowed mother's money, she relocated to TX to live with her youngest daughter's family.

WCH's Scots and Scots Irish Presbyterian ancestors had achieved much success in the development of early America, including officers in the Revolutionary and Civil wars, plantation and business owners. His Carnes cousins were very successful Memphis TN business owners. . The attached newspaper articles detail how he killed a teamster on his job in New Orleans who was delivering produce to a dock. WHC's job was to check in deliveries so that the producer would get payment for is product. WHC claimed that the drayman did not have the proper paperwork and an argument ensued. When the drayman reached in his back pocket for more paperwork, WHC thought he was going for a weapon so he killed the drayman. This was WCH's second day on this job. WCH's wife Mary Bolton Hall is shown as divorced in 1900 franklin Co TN census, but no record found for WHC in 1900, However WHC and his widowed sister are living in the household of her son in Tipton Co, TN. He claimed that he was a widower but Mary Bolton Hall and children were living in Huntsville, Madison Co AL in 1910. WHC not found after 1910 census. Jim Baucom jim0400@aol.com [1]
