Biography

James was born in Chester Pa to Quaker parents. There are several documents in the Darby Pa Minutes that appear to be James. It seems he ultimately left the church to be married by a priest, to a woman not of the church. Photos of those records can be found on ancestry and in the gallery of a tree "owned" by Marcy Fry. 7) HALLS OF HOGUE CREEK, FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA: See “WILLIAM HALL LOCATION ACCORDING TO CARTWELL” title, below, in Section II (as disputed by Richard A Hayden in a 1993 “Virginia Genealogist” article). Hayden demonstrates that this James Hall, of Frederick County, Virginia (also son of a William Hall), whose will of 1798 was made in Frederick County, lived longer than did James, son of William, my ancestor, “the old pioneer,” who, as local court cases prove, died before 1 April 1791, after having removed to Newberry County, South Carolina. Names associated with this James Hall of Frederick County (who are not known to be connected to our Halls) are Addudel, Bean, Bennett, Bonsall, Cleaver, Clowser, Denny, Grant, Hallowell, Hammond, Hiblin, Hill, Hinde, Lakeman, Longacre, Rosenburger, Speer, Wotring, and Hibbard (Hannah Hibbard of Darby Monthly Meeting, dau. of Daniel and Rachel (Bonsall), m. Thomas Hall, a Quaker of Darby Monthly Meeting in Chester (now Delaware) Co., Pa., which according to Hayden is “just across Cobb’s Creek from his residence in Blockley Township, Philadelphia.” Hayden demonstrates that the James Hall mentioned in Thomas the Quaker’s will, could be the James Hall of Hoague Creek, in Frederick County, which would eliminate him as a son of our “old pioneer” William. The lineage in this family is thought to be as follows: Thomas Hall, the Quaker, and Hannah Hibbard’s son James Hall, b. 1729, d. before 1798, married Elizabeth Bennett. Their son Bennett Hall, b. 1765, married Nancy Hammond, and bought up more land on Hogue Creek, which was inherited by their son Col. James B[ennett] Hall, b. 1797 (my RIN 19062), m. Margaret Rosenburger. James B. Hall was the only one of his siblings known to have remained in Frederick County, Virginia. shb 13 Feb 2002.

From FAG: Hannah, daughter of Daniel Hibberd, was born about 1705.Thomas and Hannah published intentions to marry in the Quaker Monthly Meeting. They were married April 27, 1729 in Darby, Delaware, Pennsylvania. They had the following children: James born Oct 15, 1729 Lydia born Apr. 11, 1731 Rachel born Jun 8, 1733 Aaron born Oct 1, 1737 Hannah born Dec 11, 1739 Margaret born Jan 23, 1741 Martha born Feb 20, 1744

Mary married Moses Speer (spears) 8 April 1794. Martha married John Denny 7 April 1789 Frederick Co., VA. There are 6 more generations that brings it down to me, Roy Edward Hall. The next generation begins with Bennett Hall and Nancy Hammond. In an article in the "VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST" by Richard Hayden it states that "James Hall died testate in Frederick Co prior to 3 April 1798. He bequeathed legacies to his sons Bennett,Caleb, James and William, to his daughters Sarah Aduddel, Martha Denny and Elizabeth, to his grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah Hill, and to James Speer, son of his daughter Mary." Also from the VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, " Therefore, the Elizabeth Hall mentioned in the 1777 deed appears to have been his second wife. Although her maiden name has not yet been determined with certainty, she was probably the Elizabeth Hill married by license to James Hall an 4 Aug. 1764. This Elizabeth Hill is believed to have been the widow of Alexander Hill who died intestate in Chester Co., PA, prior 21 May 1763, leaving a wife Elizabeth, and at least three sons, William, James and John. The maiden name of this Elizabeth Hill is known to be Elizabeth Bennett, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Albin) Bennett and the stepdaughter of Mary (Hunter)Hill Bennett, the second wife and relict of James Bennett. Elizabeth Bennett was born abt 1735 and was married on 17 May 1753 in Old Swedes' Church, Philadelphia, to Alexander Hill, the eldest son of her stepmother's prior marriage to William Hill." The James Hall bible is mentioned as being in the possession of Jonathan Wotring, a lineal descendant. There are twelve pages of the Hall family in the VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST and Richard Hayden quotes 111 sources for this information. I do not have a date when this was published, I do know it was sometime prior 1994. Richard Hayden and I are 4th cousins descending from Caleb Hall, one of James grandsons. Perhaps this little bit will help some, Roy denney@rootsweb.com

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
