Biography

The daughter of Willard Hall and Sally Porter, Mary Stella Hall was born on 28 Oct 1870 in Washington County, Ohio.

She married Frank Hugh McCoy in Washington County, Ohio on 12 Jul 1906. [1] They had one child, daughter Alice (McCoy) Merydith (1909-1986).

In 1910, Mary, her husband Frank and their daughter Alice are living with Mary's father Willard (77y) in Salem, Washington County, Ohio. Orville Walter Hall (6y), her nephew (technically, grandnephew) and Willard's great-grandson, is also living with the family. [2] [See Research Notes for additional information regarding Orville Hall.]

Frank passed in 1925. Mary did not remarry. She continued to live with her [grand]nephew Orville in Salem, Washington County, Ohio. [3]

In 1940, Mary was living with her daughter Alice and family in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. [4] It was here Mary passed away on 1 Apr 1944 at age 73. She is buried in Salem Township Cemetery in Lower Salem, Washington County, Ohio. [5]

Research Notes

Orville Walter Hall (1903-1989)

Orville Hall's birth parents are Herbert Earl Hall and Frances M. Stille (1879-1907). In 1910, Frances had passed nearly 3 years earlier and Orville (6y) is the only child not living with his father. Rather, he is living with his great-grandfather Willard Hall and [grand]aunt Mary Stella Hall. Mary Stella is the sister of William Chandler (Herbert's father), making her the aunt of Herbert. Herbert and his other three children (Albert (8y), Ethel (4y), and Letha (2y)) are living with William Chandler Hall and Adaline (Magee) Hall, Herbert's parents (Orville's grandparents). The reason why Orville was singled out is not yet known.
The tree:
Orville Walter Hall
=> Herbert Earl Hall (1881-1950) (Orville's father)
=> Wiliam Chandler Hall (1858-1940) (Orville's grandfather)
=> Willard Hall (Orville's great-grandfather)
In 1920, Orville (16y) is still living with his [grand]aunt and great-grandfather. He is listed as the son of Frank and Mary. It is unknown if Mary and Frank legally adopted Orville. Documents of a legal adoption has yet to be discovered. Regardless, it is apparent that Mary and her husband raised Orville. (In the obituary for Mary's daughter, Orville is referred to as Alice's brother, not cousin. [6]) By the 1930 census, Frank and Willard have passed. Orville (26y) is living with Mary in Salem, Washington County, Ohio. He is listed as her nephew. [7]
