He was born in East Ward Westmorland in 1844 [1]
In the English 1951 Census for Crow Hill, Ormside, Westmorland, Thomas Hall, aged 7 born 1844, Bleatarn, Westmorland, was living with his parents on the farm of his uncle Christopher Dent, who was aged 77, and a widower- he had previously been married to Jane Hall, who was Thomas's fathers Aunt. In the 1861 Census for Crow Hill, Great Ormside, Westmorland, Thomas Hall, aged 17 was still living with his parents, on this farm of 235 Acres. Evidently the Uncle Christopher Dent had died, and the farm had been taken over by Thomas Hall's father. Sometime later in the 1860s, Thomas Hall migrated to New Zealand, working initially on the West Coast. In the early 1870s he returned to his childhood home, in the hope of finding a suitable wife. (His brother Anthony Hall, who had married Ellen Martha Harris, suggested that he find a strong wife, so she would be capable of hard work.
Thomas married Elizabeth Fawcett, who proved strong and tenacious, in Warcop, Westmorland in 1875. On his return he settled with Elizabeth in Gapes Valley, Geraldine and also had a small farm at Pleasant Point. Thomas was described as a tall quietly spoken gentleman, and Elizabeth was described as having a fiery temper, and good at issuing instructions. Thomas and Elizabeth Hall later shifted to another hose, across the road, a little closer to Geraldine. They are both buried in the Old Kakahu Church Cemetery, Geraldine.
Obituary - THOMAS HALL - Timaru Herald, August 19th 1924.
Another old and highly respected identity passed away in the person of Mr Thomas Hall, of Gapes Valley. Deceased came to NZ in the early days, when all the hardships were to endure. After some 5 years he took a trip Home, where he married, returning to NZ with his bride. Some months after their arrival, they made their home in Hilton, and afterwards in Gapes Valley, where they had resided ever since. The late Mr Hall was of a quiet, unassuming disposition, and ever ready to give a helping hand in any good cause. He gained the respect and esteem of all those he came in contact with. He leaves a widow, nine surviving sons, and five daughters, to whom the district extend their sympathy.
He passed away in 1924 and was buried in Saint Aidan's Churchyard, Geraldine, Timaru District, Canterbury, New Zealand .[2] [3]
