Biography

Harry Ray Hall was born on September 21, 1891, in Dundy, Nebraska, to George Washington Hall and Catherine Ann Troutman.

The 1900 U.S. Census for Township 23 N Range 22 E, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, finds George W. Hall as the 54-year-old head of household. He is white, married for 31 years, born in April 1846 in Illinois. He is a farmer and can read and write. His father is listed as born in Illinois; his mother is listed as born in New York. The family is listed as follows: Cathrin Hall, wife, age 48, born in PA; Lafross Hall, son, age 15, born in KS; Emmzitta Hall, daughter, age 10, born in NE; Harry R. Hall, son, age 9, born in NE; Kittie B. Hall, daughter, age 8, born in MO; Hazel D. Hall, daughter, age 4, born in MO.

The 1910 U.S. Census finds Harry Hall as the 18-year-old son in his mother's household in Enid Ward 2, Garfield, Oklahoma; he is listed as 'son'. His father had died three years earlier in 1907.

At some point, Harry traveled to Colorado and joined the National Guard. He remained there for three years. When he returned to Oklahoma, he married Ella Emaline Ryan.

On June 5, 1917, Harry Ray Hall registered for the WWI draft in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. His address is listed as 1135 1/2 S Oklahoma Street in Okmulgee. His date of birth is listed as September 21, 1891, in Dundy County, Nebraska. His occupation is listed as glass worker for Okmulgee Window Glass Company. The card records that he was in the National Guard for three years in Colorado. Harry is described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark brown hair. He claims exemption from service, because he has a dependent wife and child. (Ella is pregnant at this time with their second child, my grandfather Hubert Edwin Hall.)

The 1920 U.S. Census finds Harry R. Hall as the 28-year-old head of household. He is married, white, can read and write, is a renter, and was born in Oklahoma. His father is listed as being born in Tennessee; his mother is listed as being born in the United States. Also listed is his wife, Ella Hall, age 26, born in Missouri. The following children are listed: Katherine Hall, daughter, age 4, born in Colorado, and Hoover Hall (this would be Hubert Hall, my grandfather), son, age 2, born in Oklahoma. A sister-in-law, Lucille Ryan, is also listed; she is 11 years old, born in Missouri.

At some point between 1920 and 1926, Harry Ray Hall and Ella Emaline Ryan divorce.

Harry Hall and Marie A. Stewart marry in 1926 in Okmulgee, Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The groom was 37; the bride was 24. Witnesses are listed as Evelyn E. Bridgman and Leander Strickler.

The 1930 U.S. Census for Okmulgee, Okmulgee, Oklahoma, records Harry R. Hall as the 38-year-old head of household, born in Missouri. His wife, Marie A. Hall, is 28 years, born in Louisiana. Also listed are two children: Hubert E. Hall, son, 12 years, born in Oklahoma, and Katherine Hall, daughter, 15 years, born in Colorado.

The 1940 U.S. Census finds Harry and Marie Hall in Enid, Enid City, Garfield, Oklahoma. He is 47, born in Nebraska; she is 37, born in Louisiana.

Harry Ray Hall and Marie Adele S. Hall divorced in 1945 in Duval County, Florida.

The 1950 U.S. Census for Enid, Garfield County, Oklahoma, finds the following: Abe C. Melvin, head, white male, age 67, never married, born IA; Harry Hall, partner, white male, age 66, widowed, born NE.

Harry Ray Hall died on September 1, 1968, in Enid, Garfield, Oklahoma. He is buried in Enid Cemetery with family members.

Text of an obituary can be found at a website for Enid Cemetery; it reads as follows: "Services will be held today at 2pm in the Hennenger-Allen Funeral Home Chapel for Harry R. Hall, 76. Rev. Leon Hill will officiate, and burial will follow in the Enid Cemetery. Hall died Tuesday in a local hospital following a short illness. A native of Purcell, he had spent his entire life in Oklahoma and has lived in Enid the past 35 years. He was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Katherine V. Gibson, Dodge City, Kansas, and Hubert Hall, Midwest City, one sister, Mrs. Irma Grove, Los Angeles, California, four grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Marie Stewart Hall is a brick wall. Why was she not mentioned in his obit? It's obvious from census data that they were together at least 14 years . . . no children? She is not buried in Enid Cemetery with Harry. I wish I knew more about her . . . my mother had no idea her father's father had remarried. Her father had never told her, and he had to have known . . . he lived with them! Mysteries abound in genealogy . . .
