Elsie, born in 1889 in Nova Scotia, was the daughter of Henry Seldon Hall and Margaret Marshall. She became a teacher at the age of 16. Two years later she followed her family to Alberta, where she lodged in a neighboring town and continued her teaching career. Her landlord was her future father-in-law, James Hilliard McLuhan. She married his son Herbert on December 31, 1909.
A year after their marriage, the McLuhans moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where Herbert became a real estate agent. They had two sons: Herbert Marshall in 1911 and Maurice in 1913.[1] They lived at 11342 64 Street NW until 1916 when they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba.[2]
