John Hall was born about 1836 in Virginia. In 1860 he was living in Danville, Virginia in the home of carpenter Asa Scott. John may have been working as a plasterer for Asa.

John would enlist in Company E of the 38th Virginia Infantry in 1862.

Private Hall was killed on July 3, 1863 during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg.
