Biography

Mary "Polly" Hall was born on May 3, 1774, in Salem Township, Rockingham, New Hampshire to Benjamin Hall and Hannah Ingalls. Her nickname, Polly, was her preferred name in the family records.

Polly was the fifth of seven known children born to her parents between 1767 and 1778. The family moved to Kingsboro, New York after the Revolutionary War. They joined the Kingsboro Presbyterian Church, and her father served as Deacon in this church for many years.

Polly married Elijah Burr in Kingsboro before 1797. The Burr family was also active in the early years of the Kingsboro Presbyterian Church.

Together Polly and Elijah had eight known children between 1798 and 1823.

Note: the birth dates of the fifth, sixth and seventh children of Benjamin Burr and Polly Hall are listed in the Burr family book below with a birth year of 1808. However, the odds of survival for a set of triplets born in 1808 to this extremely poor family would have been are very slim. Recent research shows evidence that the youngest two were born in 1821 and 1823.

Polly was 54 when her husband Elijah died in 1828 at age 60. She did not remarry. Sometime before 1850, Polly and several children left Kingsboro (which had been absorbed into Gloversville) due to its economic decline. They are found in/near Cuba, New York at the time of the 1850 census. She died there on November 6, 1852 at age 78. Her gravestone inscription reads: "Mary Burr, wife of Elijah Burr, DIED November 6, 1852, age 78 years, 6 ms & 14 days." [1] Her gravestone also includes an inscription for her son Elliot Collins Burr, who "died Dec. 6, 1860, age 39 years, 6 ms and 13 days." [2]
