Biography

Alice was born 2 jun 1673 in Somerset County, Maryland, to Charles and Alice Hall.[1]

Alice and John had eight children:

  1. Katherine 1695[2], married Benjamin Fooks, died 1745.
  2. William 1696
  3. John 1698
  4. Sarah 1700, married Daniel Fooks
  5. Isaac 1705
  6. Charles 1707
  7. Stephen 1711
  8. Saborah 1714

Alice is cited in her mother's will in 1717 as Alice Roach, wife of John Roach.[3]

Alice is also cited in her husband's will on 26 oct 1725:[4] Wills, Lib. 19 Folio 208. Somerset Co. Hall of Records:

In the name of God Amen, I John Roach Senr of Somerset County being weak of Body but of perfect memory & considering the uncertainty of man's Life do ordain and constitute this my Last Will & Testament in manner & form as followeth Viz.
  • First I will that all my just debts be payed in Due Time.
  • Item. I leave to my well beloved wife Allis Roach my now dwelling plantation & a privilege to drive cattle to my marshes during her natural life.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Allis Roach one negro Girle named Peggy to her and her heirs forever.
  • Item. I give and bequeath after my wife decease my now dwelling plantation with three hundred Acres of Land out of a patent called Summerfield unto my son William Roach and to his heirs or Assigns forever.
  • Item. I give unto my son William Roach fifty Acres of Land called Muling Field to him the sd William & to his heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my Son William Roach one hundred forty four Acres of Marsh Land out of a patent called partners desire lying on Annamessex on the north side of the great Annamessex to the said William & to his heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my son John Roach one hundred fifty Acres of Land called Long town & sixty three acres called father's care and thirty six Acres called Lott and joining together in little Annamessex neck to him the said John Roach & to his heirs or Assigns forever.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Charles Roach the plantation whereon my father dwelt being Two hundred Acres one hundred & fifty called Makepeace & fifty of Exchange to him the said Charles & to his Heirs or Assigns forever.
  • Item. I give to my two sons John & Charles Roach all the interest of the Marshes in Little Annamessex Neck to the said John & Charles & to their Heirs or Assigns forever.
  • Item. I give to my Isaac Roach two hundred & fifty Acres of Land out of a patent called Long Acre to him and his heirs forever.
  • Item. I give and bequeath to my son Stephen Roach Two hundred Acres of land out of a patent called Summerfield and fifty Acres called Pauls folly to him the said Stephen Roach & his heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my son Stephen Roach eight Acres called a Veil of Misery to the said Stephen and his Heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my son William Roach fifty Acres Marsh called Hopkins Destiny he the said William allowing my son Isaac Roach a privilege to winter Ten head of Cattle during the said Isaac's natural life to him the said William Roach to his heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my son-in-law Benjamin Fooks & Catherine, his wife, one hundred and Twenty Acres out of a patent called Long Acre on the southmost side of a neck called Mill neck where they now dwell to them and their heirs & assigns forever.
  • Item. I give to my well beloved wife one silver tankerd Silver Tumbler & her choice of my horses or mares and side saddle to her heirs forever.
  • Item. I give to my four youngest children namely Charles Roach, Isaac Roach, Stephen Roach & Saborah Roach each of them Ten pounds current money of Maryland to be paid out of my Estate as they come to age capable to receive it.
  • Item. I give to my wife Alis Roach one warming pan.
  • Item. I give to my wife Alis Roach one spice mortar and pestle.
  • Item. I give unto well beloved Wife aforesaid one equall Third part of all the remains of my personal estate not before given in legacies to her & her heirs forever.
  • Item. My will is that all the remainder of my personal estate should be equally divided among all my children namely Catherine Fooks, William Roach, John Roach, Charles Roach, Sarah Fooks, Isaac Roach, Stephen Roach and Saborah Roach.
  • Item. My will is that my son Isaac Roach's part or portion of my estate shall remain in the hands of my wife and my son William Roach & them give to him as they shall think fitt or convenient.
  • Item. My will is that the youngest Daughter Saborah Roach should have a negro Girl named Silence in part of her portion if she thinks fit to take it.
  • Item. I ordain constitute & appoint my well beloved wife Alis Roach & my son William Roach to be my whole & sole executors of this my Last Will & Testament in testimony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this Twenty Sixth Day of October 1725.

Alice wrote her will on 12 jan 1743-4 in Worcester County, Maryland:[5]

  • To grandson William.
  • To granddaughter Elizabeth.
  • To son-in-law Benjamin Fooks one shilling.
  • To grandchildren William, Benjamin, Jonathan, Daniel, Comfort, Abigail, Alse and Scarborough 40 shillings each.
  • To Daniel Fooks' children Elizabeth Evans, Sarah, Leah, and Rachel Fooks 40 shillings each.
  • To six children John, William, Charles, Isaac, Stephen, and Saborah Revell the remainer of my estate.
Witt: Thomas Russell, Mary Russell & Mary Toadvine.

Her will was probated 12 feb 1749-50. By this time, daughter Katherine had died, and, apparently, so had Sarah.
