William was born in 1841 in Parwich, Derbyshire, the son of William Hall (a handloom linen weaver) and Mary (Kirkham) Hall, and christened as an Anglican. With weaving being industrialised, William didn't follow in his father's footsteps and become a weaver. At the age of 19, he was working as a cow lad at Breech Farm, Carsington, still in Derbyshire. By the age of 29 (in 1871), he may have moved to Manchester and been working as a mason's labourer, if he's been identified correctly in the census. He married Elizabeth Bradbury in 1872 in Chorlton, which is part of greater Manchester. The couple had three children who lived to adulthood - Joseph, Frank, and William, all born between 1873 and 1879 in various parts of Manchester.

By 1881, William was working as a machinist, and his widowed mother-in-law was living with them - in Hulme, still in greater Manchester. By 1891, the family was living in Moss Lane, Manchester, and William was working as a Presser Off in a cotton mill - someone who did the final pressing of finished garments, and readied them for packing. His wife Elizabeth was working as a midwife, and the two eldest sons were working for an organ builder. With 4 incomes, the family was able to afford a live-in servant. Ten years later, in 1901, they had moved to Clay Lane, Timperley, Cheshire. Timperley was probably far enough from Manchester to be a much cleaner, healthier place to live, which may be why their two grandchildren were with them, though they may just have been there for a short visit. There was no domestic servant in the household now - Elizabeth was still working as a midwife, but may have had less business in this less populous area, so may have had more time to look after the household herself.

In 1906 William's eldest son Joseph emigrated to Canada with his wife and three children. William and Elizabeth followed in 1907, and their youngest son William went too in 1911. It's not clear whether the middle son Frank also emigrated, but seems likely; whoever wrote up the biography on FindAGrave thought he had also gone to the Kootenays. The 1911 census for Canada tells us that William & Elizabeth were Methodists. In 1916 the couple were living at 1418 Centre Avenue, Hillhurst, Calgary, and Elizabeth died 16 Jan 1916 in Calgary. By June 1 1916, William seems to have relocated to Benton Station, Alberta; he was there with his son William for the 1916 special census of the prairies, and may have died there in 1924.
