John Hall was born about 1829[1] in Baltimore, Maryland[2][3], Maryland. He served and died with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
Private John Hall died of disease during the United States Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the second[4] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 34 years old, married and working as a seaman when he enlisted on 14 March 1863 in Lenox, Massachusetts. He died 2 July 1864 on James Island, South Carolina due to sunstroke.[1]
