Ellen Hall was born in about 1832 in Lancashire, probably in Eccleston. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hall.

Ellen's father died in 1840, aged 60. He was buried on 9 Feb 1840 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His address was recorded as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Thatto Heath, Eccleston.
