Biography

David Hallam was born in Clinton county, Ohio on June 23, 1810, a son of Thomas Hallam, who was born in Maryland, in 1740 and died in Clinton county, in 1832. The family is of English origin and is mentioned in Domesday Book, which show the estates in lands belonged to them in the reign of William the Conqueror, in the eleventh century, when that book was created. In England, they were Jacobites, and left England to avoid religious persecution. David moved from Ohio to Indianola, Warren county, Iowa in 1857. He organized the First National Bank of Indianola, in 1865, and was its first President.

David married Margaret Fleming Sillik (or Sillich), born October 2, 1815, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Thomas Sillik and Sarah (Fleming) Sallik. They were married 21 Jun 1835 in Clinton, Ohio, United States.[1] Children of David and Margaret include:

  • Minerva Hallam, born October 14, 1833, died June 5, 1889, married 1) John C. Ellis, and 2) James M. Hamilton
  • Thomas W. Hallam, born October 14, 1835, died January 30, 1906 went into the banking business in Indianaola, under the firm name of Hallam and son. Died in Chicago, Illinois [2]

Margaret died August 21, 1840, in Clinton county, Ohio and was buried in the Sabina Cemetery. [3] David married, secondly, in Sabina, Ohio, to Jane Roberts. Children of David and Jane are:

  • Rose Hallam
  • Imogene Hallam
  • May Hallam
  • Artimsa Hallam
  • Grafton Hallam
  • Claude Hallam

David died July 18, 1881, in Indianola, and was buried by the Masonic Order, of which he had been a lifelong member. His wife, Jane, survived him. and was later buried with him in the Odd Fellows Cemetery (aka IOOF Cemetery) in Indianola.

Researcher's Notes

Margaret Fleming (Sillik) Hallam's Find A Grave mentions two more children: "Sarah Mominia Hallam and Sophia Hallam." It is not clear why these two daughters are not mentioned in David's biography.

Hallam-231 and Hallam-229 appear to represent the same person because: This person has two Find A Grave memorials. One is listed as David Hallam, and this is the name used by his biographer: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/29276925/david-hallam

The other is listed as Samuel David Hallam: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35114504

DAR Records list this person as David Hallam. A decision should be made regarding his name, but they are the same person.
