Biography

Thomas HALLAM was born in 1785 at Longton in Staffordshire, England.(*1) He married Elizabeth COLLEY on 26 December 1814 in St. Nicholas Parish Church, Newport, Shropshire, England.(*2) The details from the parish register are as follows:- "Thomas Hallam of Norton in the Parish of Stoke Upon Trent and Elizabeth Colley of this Parish were married in this church by Banns with consent of [Blank Space] this twenty sixth day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and fourteen By me John Langley Curate. This marriage was solemnized between us. Thomas Hallam. The mark of Elizabeth Colley in the presence of Richard Maddox, Edward Maddox, John James." Thomas signed his own name in the register and spelt it Hallam. One of the witnesses, John James is a witness to other marriages in the register. In 1841 Thomas was a journeyman potter.(*3) He appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Caroline Street, Longton, Staffordshire, England.(*3) In 1851 he was a potters fireman.(*1) He appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Caroline Street.(*1) He died of Diarrhea on 5 August 1852 in Longton.(*4) The address was: Berry Street, Longton, Staffordshire, England. The informant was Tamar Johnson, present at the death. Thomas was buried on 8 August 1852 in St. John the Baptist, Longton, Staffordshire, England.(*5) John Cargill performed the ceremony.

Thomas was possibly the son of John Hallam and Elizabeth Aspin who married in 1784. I can't find a baptism for him after their marriage or it before under name of Aspin. John Hallam does name a son called Thomas however in his will.

In 1861 Thomas' widow Elizabeth lived at the same address in Chancery Lane as a James Keeling born about 1815 at Great Haywood with his wife Julia Keeling born about 1808 in Longton and their son. Julia Keeling was née Hallam and the daughter of John Hallam and Elizabeth Aspin, who married in 1784. In 1841 Julia was living with an Ann Hallam who was shown as being aged 50 in 1841.

Based at his age at burial and on his death certificate Thomas was born between 1784 and 1786 and the 1851 census notes this was at Longton and suggests that 1785 or 1786 may be the year of his birth. There is a baptism a few years after this in 1789 at Longton when a Thomas Hallam son of Thomas and Alice was baptised.
