Biography

Lewis was born in 1874 at Tipton, Staffordshire, the son of Jonathan Hallard and Susannah Hallard formerly Bentley. [1]

He was baptised on 24 November 1874 at the Toll End Primitive Methodist Church. His parents were living at Toll End and father Jonathan was a puddler. Lewis’ date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 11 November 1874. [2]

The family then moved to West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

School records for Hill Top School, West Bromwich recorded Louis [sic] Hallard, born 11 November 1873 [sic], commenced there on 14 October 1880. His parent was named as Jonathan Hallard of Hawkes Lane. Louis had previously attended a school in the Tipton Board district. [3]

In the 1881 census the Hallard family was living at 46 Hawkes Lane, West Bromwich. Lewis, aged 6, was attending school. [4]

In 1891 Lewis was living with his sister Mary Ann and brother in law George Bull at 51 Pudding Bag St, West Bromwich. He was aged 17 and working as a general labourer. [5]

Lewis Hallard married Comfort Prescott on 2 June 1895 at St. James’s Church, Hill Top, West Bromwich. Their marriage certificate recorded Lewis was a bachelor aged 20 and a brick maker. His father was named as Jonathan Hallard, a puddler. Comfort was a spinster aged 19 and a brick maker. Her father was named as George Prescott, a collier. At the time of their marriage Lewis was living at 4 Phoenix St and Comfort at 10 Victoria St. Their witnesses were Samuel Prescott, Comfort's elder brother, and Eliza Wareing, Lewis’ sister. Comfort signed with her mark. [6]

Known children of this couple were Lewis Hallard born 5 August 1897, Samuel Hallard born 6 November 1899, Benjamin Hallard born 1 August 1902, Jonathan Hallard born 15 June 1905, George Hallard born 10 February 1908, Susannah Hallard born 31 January 1911, William Hallard born 28 August 1913, Mary Hallard born 1916 and Edith Hallard born 1918. Lewis and Samuel were both born at 81 Ebernezer Street, West Bromwich, Benjamin at 75 Dial Lane, West Bromwich, Jonathan at 3 Hoghton [sic] St, St Helens, Lancashire and George at 19 Baxters Lane, St Helens. [7]

In the 1901 census the family was living at 81 Ebenezer St, West Bromwich. Lewis, aged 26, was working as a labourer at the ironworks. Comfort was aged 25 and sons Lewis and Samuel were aged 3 and 1 respectively. Boarding with them was Sarah Prescot [sic], aged 19, a brickmaker. She was Comfort's younger sister. [8]

The family moved to St Helens in Lancashire between the births of sons Benjamin and Jonathan.

In the 1911 census the family was living at 19 Baxters Lane, St Helens, Lancashire. Lewis, aged 37, was working as a miner below ground at a colliery. Comfort was aged 26. Son Lewis, aged 13, was working as a glass hand at the glassworks. Samuel, Benjamin and Jonathan, aged 11, 8 and 5, were all at school and the younger children, George and Susannah, were aged 3 years and 2 months respectively. Also living with them was boarder William Carey, aged 39, a miner hewer at a colliery. [9]

Daughter Mary Hallard died in 1916 aged under 12 months. [10]

In the 1921 census the family was living at 13 Baxters Lane, St Helens. Lewis, aged 46, was a coal miner hewer employed by the Wigan Coal and Iron Company at the Clock Face Colliery [St Helens]. Comfort was aged 45. Sons Lewis aged 23, Samuel aged 21 and Benjamin aged 18 were all coal miners at the Clock Face Colliery. Johnathan [sic], aged 16, was a coal miner employed by Richard Evans and Company at the Sherdley Colliery. George aged 13, Susannah aged 10 and William aged 7 were all still at school. Edith was aged 3 years. Still living with them was boarder William Carey, aged 47. He, too, was a coalminer at the Clock Face Colliery. Also boarding with them was the Holland family, Edward aged 22, his wife Nellie aged 21 and their daughter Elizabeth aged 6 months. Edward was a coal miner employed by Richard Evans Colliery Company at the Sutton Manor Colliery. [11]

Lewis later worked in the Lea Green Colliery at St Helens, owned by Sutton Heath and Lea Green Collieries Co Ltd. The following injury has been recorded in their records of mine accidents -
22/03/1926 Fall of stone crushed thumb. Address: 13 Baxters Lane. [12]
This accident may in fact refer to Lewis' son Lewis.

Comfort Hallard died in 1928 aged 53 years. [13]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Lewis was still living at 13 Baxters Lane, St Helens. Born 11 November 1874, he was aged 64 and recorded as a retired brick maker. Living with him were sons Lewis, born 5 August 1897 and Samuel born 5 [sic] November 1899 [his birth certificate records Samuel's date of birth as 6 November 1899]. Both were colliery contractor's men below ground. [14]

Lewis Hallard died in 1945 aged 71 years. [15]
