Biography

John Walter was born in 1852 at Longfleet, Dorset, the son of Robert Hallard and Sarah Martha Bolt Hallard formerly Anstey. [1]

He was baptised on 18 July 1852 at the parish church of Longfleet. His parents were named as Robert Hallard, a labourer and Sarah Hallard, of Longfleet. [2]

In the 1861 census Walter and his father Robert were staying with his paternal grandparents, William and Sarah Hallard at Longfleet. He was aged 8 years. [3]

In 1871 Walter, aged 18, and his cousin Francis, aged 21, were both living with their grandmother Sarah Hallard at King St, Poole. Walter was working as a groom. [4]

In 1881 Walter and grandmother Sarah were still living at King St however Walter was then named as the head of the household. Aged 27, he was working as a gentleman's servant. [5]

Walter Hallard married Sarah Strange in 1882. [6]

Children of this couple were Bertie William Hallard born 1882, Brenda Maud Hallard born 1884, Charles Hallard born 1886, James Hallard born 1888, Blanch Hallard born 1891, Ella Hallard born 1893, Walter Thomas Hallard born 1895, Frank Hallard born 1898, Frederick Hallard born 15 July 1900 at 10 Denmark Rd, Longfleet [Birth certificate] and Edward Hallard born 1902. All were born in Dorset.

Bertie William Hallard was baptised on 29 April 1904 at the parish church of Longfleet. His parents were named as Walter Hallard, a labourer, and Sarah Hallard, of Hamworthy. Bertie was then aged 22 years.
Brenda Maud Hallard was baptised on 25 November 1900 at the parish church of Longfleet. Her parents were named as Walter Hallard, a labourer, and Sarah Hallard, of Longfleet.
James Hallard was baptised 2 January 1889 at the Parish of St James in Poole. His parents were named as Walter Hallard, a clerk, and Sarah Hallard, of Poole.
Ella, Thomas, Frank and Frederick Hallard were baptised on 17 December 1901 at the parish church of Longfleet. Their parents were named as Walter Hallard, a labourer, and Sarah Hallard, of Longfleet. [7]

In the 1891 census the family was living at King St, Poole, Dorset. Walter, aged 41 [sic], was working as a labourer at the gasworks. Sarah was aged 29 and children Bertie, Brenda, Charles and James were aged 8, 6, 5 and 2 respectively. [8]

Daughter Blanch Hallard died in 1892 aged under 12 months. [9]

She was buried on 19 January 1892 in the parish of at St James, Poole. The burial register further recorded Blanch was living at Poole when she died and was aged 7 months. [10]

By 1901 the family had moved to 10 Denmark Rd, Longfleet, Dorset. Walter, aged 48, was working as a general labourer. Sarah was aged 38. Charles, aged 15, was working as a tile maker. The younger children James, Ella, Thomas, Frank and Fred were aged 12 years, 8 years, 6 years, 3 years and 8 months. [11]
Bertie was boarding at the home of Henry Mantell, a smith, gas & water fitter, and family, at 4 Lytton Rd, Bournemouth, Dorset. Aged 18, he was working as a railway engine cleaner. [12]
Brenda was employed as a general domestic servant in the home of Jane Snow, a widow, at Serpentine Rd, Longfleet. She was aged 16. Her surname was incorrectly recorded as Ballard in this census. [13]

In 1911 the family was living at 10 Station Rd, Lower Hamworthy, Dorset. Aged 59, Walter was working as a coal heaver. Sarah was aged 48. Daughter Brenda, aged 26, was working as a domestic servant. Charles, aged 24, and James, aged 22, were both working as tile makers. Ella, aged 18, and Tom, aged 16, were both working as tile wipers. Younger children Frank, Frederick and Edward were all still at school. They were aged 13, 10 and 8 years respectively. [14]

Sarah Jane [sic] Hallard died in 1931 aged 69 years. [15]

She was buried on 19 December 1931 at Hamworthy. The burial register recorded Sarah was living at 11 [sic] Station Rd at her death and she was aged 69 years. [16]

John Walter Hallard died in 1938 aged 89 years. [17]

He was buried on 23 April 1938 at the parish church of Hamworthy. The burial register recorded John Walter was living at 10 Station Rd at his death and he was aged 89 years. [18]
