Lily was born in 1901 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire, the daughter of Joseph Cartwright and Edith Cartwright formerly Hallard. [1]
In the 1911 census the Cartwright family was living at 33 Fisher St, Great Bridge, Tipton. Lily was aged 9 years and attending school. [2]
In the 1921 census the family was living at 133 Dial Lane, West Bromwich. Lily, aged 19, was a servant at Palfreyman Drapers in Black Lake. [3]
Lilian [sic] Cartwright married Peter L McGrath in 1925. [4]
This couple had three children named Joseph Clarence Ronald born 1926, Peter Raymond born 1929 and Rowland born 1933.
Lily and Peter lived mainly in the Stone Cross and Friar Park areas of West Bromwich. For a time they also lived in Birmingham. [5]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Peter and Lily were living at 155 James Turner Street, Birmingham. Peter, born 9 February 1888, was aged 51. He was a motor body painter. Lily, born 24 December 1901, was aged 37. Their children were not recorded at home. [6]
Son Roland [sic] was then living with Alfred W and Maud F Dolphin at 4 The Drive, Rushwick, Martley Rural District, Worcestershire. Born 13 August 1933, he was aged 6. Roland was recorded as an evacuee. [7]
Peter Leopold McGrath died in 1940 aged 52 years. [8]

McGRATH. – The WIFE & CHILDREN of the late PETER McGRATH, wish to Thank relatives, friends, neighbours, also Morris-Commercial employees (East works) for their sympathy and floral tributes in their sad loss. [9]
Lily McGrath remarried to Ernest Dawson in 1944. [10]
This couple had one child.
Lily Dawson died in 1972 aged 71 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 24 December 1901. [11]
She was buried on 10 November 1972 at Heath Lane Cemetery [Grave 4952] with her mother Edith O'Connell. The burial register recorded Lily was residing at 93 Devon Rd, Wednesbury at her death. She was aged 70. The grave was owned by her sister Edith Hilda Andrews. [12]
