Biography

Reginald Irving was born on 26 November 1900 at Plainfield, New Jersey the son of James William Hallard and Juliet Cornell Gristy.
He was baptised at Trinity Church, Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania on 8 December 1901, the second Sunday in Advent. His parents were named as James William Hallard and Juliet Cornell (Grisly) Hallard. The witnesses were Irving Reginald De Hart of Plainfield and Elizabeth Daubert of 627 Jane St, S. Side. Reginald's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as above. [1]

In the 1905 New Jersey State census the Hallard family was living at 95 Cherry St, Plainfield. Reginald was aged 4 years. [2]

This family has not been located in the 1910 census.

In the 1915 New Jersey State census the Hallard family was living at 1430 West 3rd St, Plainfield. Reginald was aged 14 years. [3]

In the 1920 census Reginald was still living with his parents at 1430 West 3rd Street, Plainfield. He was aged 19. [4]

Reginald Irving Hallard married Gertrude Julia Bornmann on 19 August 1922.

From the Plainfield Courier-News dated Saturday 19 August 1922, Pg 1 -
MISS BORMAN [sic] BRIDE OF REGINALD HALLARD.
Miss Gertrude Julia Bormann [sic], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J .W. Bormann [sic], of 295 Somerset street, North Plainfield, this morning became the bride of Reginald Irving Hallard, of 602 New street. The ceremony was performed at the parsonage of the Temple Baptist Church, the Rev. E. I. Case officiating. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Hallard left for a honeymoon through Long Island, after which they will make their home in this city. [5]

This couple had three known children named Jean born c1926, Donald Jay born 19 March 1928 and Theodore Alvin born 2 November 1930.

Reginald first appeared in the Plainfield Directory in 1927. He was living at 1220 South End Ave and was working as a clerk at Newark Auto Supply Inc. The same entry appeared in the 1928 directory. However in 1929 he was working as a manager at Niles Auto Parts Co. [6]

In the 1930 census Reginald, Gertrude and their two children, Jean aged 4 and Donald aged 2, were living in their own home at 1220 South End Ave, Plainfield. Reginald, aged 29, was employed as a manager in the auto parts industry. Gertrude was aged 28. His sister Dorothy, aged 20, was also living with them. She was working as a clerk. [7]

In the 1938 and 1940 Plainfield directories Reginald was employed as a salesman and secretary at Thul Auto Parts Co Inc. [8]

The 1940 census confirmed the family was still at 1220 South End Parkway. Reginald, aged 29, was a salesman in the auto industry. Gertrude was aged 38 and children Jean, Donald and Theodore were aged 14, 12, and 9 years respectively. [9]

Reginald Irving Hallard completed a WWII Draft Registration card on 15 February 1942. At that time he was still living at 1220 South End Parkway and was aged 41 years. Reginald had been born on 26 November 1900 at Plainfield, New Jersey. He was employed by J. M. Auto Parts Co. [John B. Manziano], 200 West Second St, Plainfield. The name and address of a person who would always know his address was recorded as wife Gertrude J. Hallard, of the same address. Physically Reginald was described as 5 feet, 7 inches in height and weighed 169 pounds. He had a dark complexion with gray eyes and brown hair. [10]

In the 1943 and 1947 Plainfield directories Reginald was the manager at J M Auto Parts Co. His home address remained the same.
The 1949 directory however listed Reginald and Gertrude as operating their own business named Hal’s Auto Parts. Son Theodore was a clerk for the Plainfield-Courier News Co. He was living at home with his parents at 1220 South End Parkway.
In the 1951 to 1957 directories Reginald was listed as the president and Gertrude as the vice president of Hal's Auto Parts, 135 W 4th St. The secretary and treasurer of the business was John A Dougherty. Then in 1957 son Donald was added as a salesman at the business. Reginald and Gertrude continued to live at 1220 South End Parkway. [11]

FAMILY FETES R. I. HALLARDS.
Mr. and Mrs. Reginald I. Hallard of 1220 South End Parkway were honored at a 40th wedding anniversary dinner yesterday in Mrs. D’s Restaurant, Scotch Plains, by their children. They were married Aug. 19, 1922, in the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church and have lived in the area since that time. Mrs. Hallard is the former Miss Gertrude Bornmann, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Bornmann of Plainfield. Her husband is proprietor of Hal’s Auto Parts, 135 W. Fourth St. They have two daughters, Mrs. Jean Apgar of 1220 South End Parkway and Mrs. Carl Snell of 1823 Fourth St., Arbor; two sons, Donald Hallard, 270 Parkview Dr., Scotch Plains and Theodore Hallard, 26 Fairview Ave., North Plainfield, and four grandchildren. Of interest Mrs. Carl Snell was Rita M. Snell, nee Dombro, a niece of Gertrude's.

Reginald Irving Hallard died on 7 November 1970 at Volusia, Florida aged 69 years. His date of birth was recorded as 26 November 1900. [13]

HALLARD – Reginald I. (Hal) on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1970, in his 70th year, husband of Gertrude Bormann Hallard, father of Donald Hallard, Theodore Hallard and Mrs. Jean Apgar, residence 1343 Continental Dr., Daytoona [sic] Beach, Fla., formerly of Plainfield. Memorial Funeral Home, 400 Franklin Place at E. Seventh St., Plainfield, at a time to be announced. Interment Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.

From the Courier-News dated Tuesday 10 November 1970, Pg 24 -
REGINALD I. HALLARD.
Plainfield – The funeral for Reginald I. "Hal" Hallard, 69, of Daytona Beach, Fla., retired Plainfield businessman, will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Norman Sweeting, pastor of the Hydewood Park Baptist Church, North Plainfield, will officiate and interment will be at Hillside Cemetery. Friends may visit the funeral home today, 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Mr. Hallard, who owned the Hal Auto Parts store here, died Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla. Inadvertently omitted in the list of survivors published yesterday was a daughter, Mrs. Jean Apgar of Plainfield. [14]

Gertrude Hallard died on 19 June 1980 aged 78 years.

GERTRUDE B. HALLARD.
Watchung – Gertrude Bornmann Hallard, 78, of 41 Hillcrest Road, died yesterday (June 19, 1980) at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield. She was born in Warren and resided in the Plainfield area all her life. Her husband was the late Reginald Hallard, who died in 1970 after 48 years of marriage. She is survived by two sons, Theodore, with whom she resided, and Donald of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Jean A. Ahlfeld of Westfield; a sister, Ethel Boyd of North Plainfield, three grandchildren and a great-grandson. Arrangements are under the direction of A. M. Runyon and Son Funeral Home in Plainfield. [15]
