Biography

Donald Jay was born on 19 March 1928 at Plainfield, New Jersey, the son of Reginald Irving Hallard and Gertrude Bornmann.

In the 1930 census Donald was living with his parents at 1220 South End Ave, Plainfield. He was aged 2 years. [1]

In the 1940 census the family was still at the same address but it had been renamed to 1220 South End Parkway. Donald was aged 12 years. [2]

Donald Jay Hallard completed a WWII Draft Registration card on 19 March 1946. At that time he was still living at 1220 South End Parkway, Plainfield and was aged 18 years. Donald had been born on 19 March 1928 at Plainfield, New Jersey. He was still a student. The name and address of a person who would always know his address was recorded as his father Reginald Hallard, of the same address. Physically Donald was described as 5 feet, 11 inches in height and weighed 155 pounds. He had a light complexion with blue eyes and brown hair. [3]

A photograph of Donald was included in the 1946 Plainfield High School Yearbook named Milestone with the following comments - Don likes model building and automobiles . . . a member of the Air Service Division of the Victory Corps in his freshman year . . . another planner for the world of tomorrow as a draftsman. From the Plainfield Courier-News dated Monday 22 August 1949, Pg 6 -
Donald Hallard of 1220 S. End Pkwy. left Saturday for a visit with his grandparents, Mr. and J. W. Hallard of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Plainfield. [5]

Donald Jay Hallard married Patricia Adelmann on 13 April 1951.

From the Plainfield Courier-News dated Saturday 14 April 1951, Pg 6 -
COUPLE WED IN BOROUGH.
Scotch Plains – Miss Patricia Adelmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Clarence G. Adelmann of 435 Willow Ave., and Pvt. Donald J. Hallard, U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reginald I. Hallard of 1220 South End Parkway, Plainfield, were married last night in the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church, North Plainfield, by the Rev. Earl E. Hair, pastor. Escorted and given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a candlelight satin gown fashioned with a high neckline trimmed with Chantilly lace and a full skirt ending in a train. Her Juliet cap of satin was attached to a fingertip veil and she carried a bouquet of bride’s roses and stephanotis. Miss Marlene Montague of Scotch Plains, the bride’s only attendant, wore a gown of aqua satin and net styled with an illusion neckline and a full skirt. Her headdress was a halo of pink flowers and she carried a bouquet of pink roses. Theodore Hallard of Plainfield was best man for his brother. Ushers included Irving Terry of Plainfield and Lionel Howard of Dunellen. After a reception the couple left for a brief wedding trip. On their return the bride will reside with her parents while her husband returns to his station at Fort Dix. Mrs. Hallard is a graduate of Scotch Plains High School and is employed by the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark. Private Hallard, a graduate of Plainfield High School, was associated with his father in the auto parts business in Plainfield before entering the service. Pre-nuptial parties for the bride included a miscellaneous shower given by relatives of the bridegroom at the Hallard home and a personal shower given by Miss Montague at the Adelmann home.

HALLARD RECEIVES CORPORAL’S STRIPES.
Scotch Plains – Corp. Donald J. Hallard of 435 Willow Ave, has been promoted to that rank in Germany where he is serving with the Army Personnel Office of the 26th Infantry Regiment. He has been in service since January 1951. He went to Germany in June 1951. Corporal Hallard was graduated from Plainfield High School in 1946. He was associated with his father in the auto parts business in Plainfield prior to service in the army. He is married to the former Patricia Adelmann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Adelmann. The couple has one son, Wayne Bruce, three months old. [6]

The 1957 Plainfield Directory listed Donald living at 370 Parkview Dr, Scotch Plains. He was working as a salesman for the family business Hal's Auto Parts. [7]

Patricia A. Hallard died on 29 October 1986 at Plainfield aged 56 years. Her date of birth was recorded as 5 February 1930. [8]

DEATH NOTICE.
HALLARD. Patricia A. (nee Adelmann), on Wednesday, October 29, 1986, of Scotch Plains, beloved wife of Donald J., devoted mother of Miss Karen Hallard and Wayne Hallard, beloved daughter of Mrs. Clara (Mertz) and the late Clarence Adelmann, sister of Wayne Adelmann, and 1 grandchild Travis Hallard. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 9.15 a.m. at “The Rossi Funeral Home”, 1937 Westfield Ave, Scotch Plains, officiating Rev. Dr. John W. Wilson at 10.00 a.m. interment Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and Scotch Plains Rescue Squad and will be accepted at the funeral home. Visitation Thursday 7-9 p.m., Friday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

PATRICIA HALLARD.
Scotch Plains – Patricia Adelmann Hallard, 56, died yesterday (Oct. 29, 1986) at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. She was born in Newark and lived in Plainfield and North Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains 46 years ago. Mrs. Hallard was a receptionist for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Warren for the past three years. She previously was a receptionist for Park Cleaners Inc. in Scotch Plains for 14 years. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Westfield. Surviving are her husband, Donald J. Hallard; a daughter, Karen of North Plainfield, a son, Wayne of Scotch Plains; her mother, Clara Adelmann of Scotch Plains; a brother, Wayne Adelmann of MacArthur, Ohio; and a grandchild. Arrangements are by Rossi Funeral Home in Scot Plains. [9]

Patricia was buried at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains.

Donald remarried to Lucille Lilienthal on 19 March 1988 at Westfield, New Jersey. [10]

Donald Jay Hallard died on 1 March 1997 at Sarasota, Florida aged 68 years. His date of birth was recorded as 19 March 1928. [11]

Donald Jay Hallard, 66 of Nokomis, Florida, formerly of Scotch Plains, died Saturday, March 1, at Bon Secours Venice Hospital in Nokomis. Born in Plainfield, Mr. Hallard had lived in Scotch Plains most of his life before moving to Nokomis in 1994. A United States Army veteran, Mr. Hallard served with the 26th Infantry Division No. 1, known as the Bloody One, as a Corporal in Germany during the Korean conflict. He had been a brake mechanic for Hal’s Auto Parts in Plainfield, a family-owned and operated business, for most of his life. He retired in 1977. Mr. Hallard was a member of the Congregational Church of Westfield. He was a trustee of the St. Andrew United Church of Christ in Sarasota, Florida. He was a volunteer fireman for 27 years with the Scotch Plains Fire Department. Mr. Hallard was a member of the Scotch Plains Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10122. His first wife, Mrs. Patricia Adelmann Hallard, died in 1986. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, March 6, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains. [12]
