Biography

Mary was born on 12 October 1830 (baptised 1 May 1831) at Culmstock, Devonshire, the daughter of Jonathan and Mary Hallard.

In the 1841 census she was living at home with her parents at Great Lane, Culmstock, Devonshire, aged 9 years.

In 1851 Mary Ann was the only child of Jonathan and Mary Hallard’s that had remained in Culmstock. She was still living at Great Lane, Culmstock but with her cousin [or so I believe] John Hallard, son of William Hallard [believed to be a brother of Jonathan’s]. Mary Ann’s age is difficult to read as it has been overwritten. It appears to say she was 30, when in fact she would only have been 20 years of age. She was working as a dressmaker. John was 30 and described as a pauper (no calling) and as blind.

By the time of the next census Mary Ann had made the move to Aston in Warwickshire and was living with her father and his new family at 15 Garrison Terrace. Her age on this census is clearly 30 and she was still employed as a dressmaker.

In 1871 Mary Ann was living next door to Martha Hallard and children [Jonathan himself died in 1865] at 14 Garrison Terrace. At aged 40 she was still a dressmaker.

In 1881 her address is given as 16 Garrison Street, Aston [Martha and children are still at number 15]. Aged 50 she has continued her employment as a dressmaker. Living with her were her niece Mary Ann Hallard, daughter of Samuel, aged 24, also working as a dressmaker, and lodger Jane Chatwin aged 43, a tube charger.

In 1891 Mary Ann was still at 16 Garrison Street and still employed as a dressmaker. This census she had her sister in law Elizabeth Hallard [estranged wife of half brother George Hallard] and her two children Alice aged 10 and Harry aged 8 living with her. Elizabeth was aged 35 and employed as a pen worker.

Mary Ann Hallard died aged 66 years [Deaths Dec Qtr 1896/Aston 6d 152].
