Lewis Hallard was born on 14 July 1840 at 5 a.m. at Bridgwater, Somersetshire, the son of John Hallard, a labourer, and Sarah Hallard formerly Oughton [Aughton]. The informant of his birth was his mother Sarah Hallard of Bridgwater. She signed with her mark. [1]
He was baptised on 27 January 1841 at St. Mary's, Bridgwater. His parents were then named as John and Sally Hallard of Bridgwater. John was still a labourer. [2]
From Bridgwater the family moved to Bishops Hull, Taunton, Somersetshire [where brother Jonathan was born] and then to Plympton Erle, near Plymouth, Devonshire [where sister Sarah was born].
His mother Sarah died on 27 December 1847 at Stoke Damerel, Devonshire when Lewis was aged 7 years. His father remarried the following year and moved to Staffordshire.
In the 1851 census Lewis, aged 12, and siblings Jonathan, aged 10 and Sarah, aged 4, were living at the Wellington Union Workhouse in Wellington, Somersetshire. [3]
In the 1861 census Lewis and brother Jonathan were back living with their father and his second family. John Hallard had inexplicitly begun to use the surname Williams. The Williams family was then living at Pudding Bag St, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Lewis Williams, aged 20, and Jonathan Williams, aged 18, were both employed as labourers. [4]
Lewis Hallard married Hannah Blunt on 18 May 1863 at St. Thomas, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Their marriage certificate recorded Lewis was a bachelor aged 23 years and a caster. His father was named as John Hallard, a labourer. Hannah was a spinster aged 28 years. Her father was named as Benjamin Blunt, a painter. Both parties gave their address simply as St. Thomas’ Parish. Their witnesses were Edward and Mary Ann Haddon. [5]
Known children of this couple were John born 1864, Elizabeth born c1866 and Sarah Ann born 1869, all born in Walsall, Staffordshire, and John Lewis born 1872 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Of interest in the Birth Indexes John, Sarah Ann and John Lewis all had their mother's maiden name recorded as Williams. Elizabeth's birth registration has not been located.
Son John Hallard died in 1866 aged 1 year. [6]
Daughter Elizabeth was baptised on 22 December 1867 at All Saints Church, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Lewis and Hannah were then living at Temple St and Lewis was a blacksmith. [7]
In the 1971 census the family was living at Queen St, Hill Top, West Bromwich. Lewis, aged 31, was a blacksmith. Hannah was aged 36 and daughters Elizabeth and Sarah were aged 4 and 1 respectively. [8]
Son John Lewis was baptised on 4 March 1875 at the Primitive Methodist Church, Golds Green, West Bromwich. The family was then living at Harvils Hawthorne and Lewis was a blacksmith. John’s date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 28 January 1872. [9]
School records for Hill Top School, West Bromwich state son John [Lewis] Hallard, born 28 January 1872, started school there on 11 March 1878. He had previously been in the infants. The family was still living at Harvill's Hawthorn. [10]

In the 1881 census the family was living at 34 Harvill’s Hawthorne, West Bromwich. Lewis, aged 40, was working as a forge blacksmith. Did he have his own smithy at their home at 34 Harvils Hawthorne? Hannah was aged 46, Lizzie, as named, was 14, Sarah was 11 and John was aged 9. [12]
Wife Hannah Hallard died in 1884 aged 49 years. [13]
Louis [sic] Hallard remarried to Caroline Grant nee White on 30 August 1885 at St Cuthbert’s Church, Birmingham. Their marriage certificate recorded Lewis was a widower of full age and a blacksmith. His father was named as John Hallard, a blacksmith. Caroline was a widow of full age. Her father was named as James White (deceased), a tailor. Both gave their residence at the time of marriage as Winson Street. Their witnesses were John and Hannah Blewer. [14]
In the 1891 census the family was living at 101 Shireland Rd in the Hamlet of Smethwick. Lewis, aged 50, was still working as a blacksmith but then stated he was employed, not self employed. His wife was incorrectly named Charlotte [should have read Caroline]. She was aged 62 years. Son John, aged 19, was working as a bricklayer. Also living with them were his daughter and son in law, Elizabeth and John Blewer and granddaughter Sylvia, aged 10 months. John Blewer, aged 29, was employed as a axle turner. [15]
Wife Caroline Hallard died in 1895 aged 65 years. [16]
In both the 1901 and 1911 censuses Lewis was living with John and Elizabeth Blewer. In 1901 the family was living at 98 Florence Rd, Smethwick. Lewis, aged 60, was working as a general labourer. [17] In 1911 they were living at 5 Hume St, Smethwick. Lewis was aged 70. [18]
Lewis Hallard died in 1912 aged 72 years. [19]
