Biography

John Lewis Hallard was born in 1872 at West Bromwich, Staffordshire, the son of Lewis Hallard and Hannah Hallard formerly Williams. [1]

He was baptised on 4 March 1875 at the Primitive Methodist Church, Golds Green, West Bromwich. The family was then living at Harvils Hawthorne and father Lewis was a blacksmith. John’s date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 28 January 1872. [2]

School records for Hill Top School, West Bromwich state John Hallard, born 28 January 1872, started school there on 11 March 1878. He had previously been in the infants. His address was recorded as Harvill's Hawthorn. [3]

In the 1881 census John was living with his parents and siblings at 34 Harvils Hawthorne. He was aged 9 years. [4]

His mother Hannah Hallard died in 1884 when John was aged 11 years.

His father remarried the following year.

By the time of the 1891 census the family was living at 101 Shireland Rd in the Hamlet of Smethwick, Stsffordshire. John, aged 19, was working as a bricklayer. [5]

John Lewis Hallard married Clara Griffiths in 1891 at Birmingham. [6]

This couple had 11 children named Myrtle Annie Hallard born 11 June 1891, Lewis born 1892, John Edward born 3 August 1894, Clara born 16 September 1895, Charles born 1897, Elizabeth born 1898, William Henry born 1901, May Lydia born 13 Nov 1902, Samuel Lewis born 12 September 1904, Harriet born 17 January 1908 and Arthur born 4 November 1909. They were all born in Smethwick except for Lewis and John who were both born in Birmingham.

Two of their children were baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Smethwick, Charles on 8 July 1897[7] and Elizabeth on 22 September 1898.[8] The family was living at Bearwood Hill at both baptisms and John was a bricklayer.
William Henry was baptised on 31 January 1901,[9] May Lydia on 4 December 1902,[10] Samuel Lewis on 6 October 1904[11] and Arthur[12] and Harriet[13] on 2 December 1909, all at Smethwick.

Son Lewis Hallard died in 1895 aged 2 years. [14]

Son Charles Hallard died in 1897 aged under 12 months. [15]

Daughter Elizabeth Hallard died in 1900 aged 1 year. [16]

In the 1901 census John, aged 29, a bricklayer, and Clara, aged 28, were living with their children at 69 Bearwood Hill [not to be confused with Bearwood Rd], Smethwick. Their children were named as Martha A [should be Myrtle] aged 10, John aged 7, Clara aged 6 and William aged 3 months. [17]

Children John, born 3 August 1894, and Clara, born 28 August 1895, attended Corbett Street School, Smethwick. They were both recorded as starting on 1 September 1904 after transferring from the Junior school. The family was then living at 69 Bearwood Hill. Clara left to move to Waterloo Rd School on 31 August 1908. Details of John's departure was not recorded. [18]

In the other case, John Lewis Hallard, of Laundry Road, was summoned for persistent cruelty towards his wife. – An order was made for 12s. per week, and the costs. [19]

In the 1911 census John was boarding at the home of John Summerton and family at 25 Peel St, Southampton, Hampshire. Aged 39, he was working as a bricklayer. Also boarding with the family was Alfred Willetts, aged 34, another bricklayer. He was also born in West Bromwich. [20]
Meanwhile, at home with the children, Clara was living at 13 The Poplars, Montague Rd, Smethwick. She was aged 37. Myrtle, aged 19, was working as a press girl at the lamp works; John, aged 16, was a filer & driller; Clara, aged 15, was a box maker (gaper); William was aged 10, May was aged 8, Samuel was aged 6, Harriet was aged 3 and Arthur was aged 1. [21]

In 1921 John Lewis and Clara were living at 10 Laundry St, Smethwick. John, aged 49, was a bricklayer with Price Bros, Bakers, Montague Rd, Smethwick. Clara was aged 49. Her occupation was recorded as 'cook for husband'. May, aged 18, was a shop attendant for a grocer named Edwards. Samuel, aged 16, was a bricklayer's labourer, working for the same employer as his father. Harriet was aged 13 and Arthur aged 11. [22]

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time John and Clara were still residing at 10 Laundry Road, Smethwick. John, aged 67, was a retired bricklayer. His date of birth was recorded as 28 January 1872. Clara was aged 68. Her date of birth was recorded as 29 April 1871. Also living with them were married daughter May Hamlington and her three children. [23]

Clara Hallard died in 1947 aged 77 years. [24]

John Lewis Hallard died in 1948 aged 76 years. [25]
