Mary Ann was born in 1883 at West Bromwich, the daughter of Jonathan Hallard and Rebecca Hallard formerly Berrington. [1]
She was baptised on 22 March 1883 at Golds Green Primitive Methodist Church, West Bromwich. Her parents were then living at Golds Green and father Jonathan was a puddler. Mary's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 2 March 1883. [2]
In the 1891 census the Hallard family was living at 1 Reynold St in the Hamlet of Smethwick, Staffordshire. Mary was aged 8 years. [3]
In the 1901 census the family was living at 91 Dial St, West Bromwich. Mary Ann was aged 19. [4]
Mary Ann Hallard married Samuel Bates 22 December 1901 at St. Andrew’s Church, West Bromwich. Their marriage certificate recorded Samuel was a bachelor aged 21 and a puddler. His father was named as Benjamin Bates, a miner. Mary was a spinster aged 20. Her father was named as Jonathan Hallard, a puddler. At the time of their marriage Samuel was living at 10 Ballfields - Horseley Heath [Tipton] and Mary at 77 New St. Their witnesses were William Wyke and Susannah Hallard, Mary’s sister and her future husband. Mary Ann signed with her mark. [5]
This couple had six children named Harry [1903], Elsie May [1904], Samuel [1910], Benjamin [1914], Elizabeth Jane [1916] and Cyril Bates [1919], all born in West Bromwich.
In the 1911 census the Bates family was living at 150 New St, Hilltop, West Bromwich. Samuel, aged 29 was employed as an ironworker puddler at Excelsior Works and Maryann [sic], aged 28, was assisting in the business at home. It is unclear what the business being run from home was. Children Harry, Elsie and Samuel were aged 8 years, 7 years and 9 months respectively. Also living in was servant Annie Johnson, aged 15. [6]
Excelsior Steel and Iron Co. Ltd, iron manufacturers were situated in Dial Lane, Hill Top.
Son Benjamin Bates died in 1914 in infancy. [7]
He was buried on 26 March 1914 at Heath Lane Cemetery. Benjamin was aged 1 month and had been living at 97 New St, Hill Top at his death. [8]
In the 1921 census the family was living at 116 New St, West Bromwich. Samuel, aged 39, was an iron worker at the Excelsior Iron Works, West Bromwich. Maryann [sic] was aged 37. Harry, aged 18, was also an iron worker at the Excelsior Iron Works. Elsie, aged 16, was a moulder in the holloware trade. She was then out of work. Samuel was aged 10, Jenny, as named, aged 5 and Cyril aged 2. [9]
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Samuel and Mary were residing at 12 Peters Street, West Bromwich. Samuel, born 21 September 1881, was aged 58. He was a grey iron dresser. Mary, born 2 March 1883, was aged 56. Son Cyril, born 17 June 1919, was aged 20. He was a core maker. [10]
Mary Ann Bates died in 1957 aged 74 years. [11]
Samuel Bates died in 1966 aged 84 years. [12]
He was buried on 10 June 1966 at Heath Lane Cemetery, West Bromwich [Section Q, Grave No. 16120], with his daughter Elizabeth Jane aka Jane Elizabeth New, who had died in 1940. The burial register further recorded Samuel was aged 84 and had been living at 18 Norbury Rd, West Bromwich at his death.The owner of the grave was Robert New, Elizabeth's husband. [13]
