Alfred was born Dec 30, 1868 in Sweden to Abraham and Anna Lisa (Svensdotter) Hallberg. He enlisted in the US Navy September 3, 1891 at the rank of Seaman in New York. He re-enlisted in 1895 and was serving aboard the USS Maine as a Coxswain when the ship exploded in Havana Harbor in the USS Maine Disaster. Alfred survived the explosion and was transferred to the USS Montgomery. He was on board the Montgomery for the First Battle of San Juan, on 12 May 1898. He was honorably discharged Sep. 1898. He re-enlisted again December 13, 1898 but was listed as a deserter on December 19, 1898.
He married Augusta Nikolina on November 20, 1898 in Göteborgs Karl Johans, Göteborg och Bohus (Västra Götaland), Sverige (Sweden). They had at least four children: Alfred, David, Lillian, and Viola. He died September 13, 1940 and is buried at Arlington Park Cemetery, Greenfield, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States of America.
