George's address at the time of his marriage (1844) appears as "Ship Ellen, Portsmouth Harbour". A researcher in the in the Public Records Office (BT119, index to Series II 1835-44) reports: "George Hallett 6050. The actual Series II record in BT122/27 had only one voyage for George Hallett, with details: 30-Fareham, Ellen C 80/82 12/43. I think this means that he was on the ship "Ellen" registered 30 (Cowes), home port Fareham, coastal trade, voyage(s) between 80 (Portsmouth) and 82 (Ramsgate), return filed Dec. 1843."
George was evidently a career sailor, and later obtained his (Master's) 'certificate of service' no. 40,839. This much appears in Lloyd's Captains Register, together with the names of several ships captained by him: 'Marquess of Bute' 27,068 t., 1856-57; 'Baroness', 23,480 t., 1859-66; 'Durley', 56,761 t., 1867-68. At the time of making his Will (1875) he was commanding the screw steamer 'South Tyne'. Saw service in the Mediterranean, Baltic and West Indies.
A photograph of his wife Frances (a.k.a. Fanny), taken in Trieste, Italy (no date) suggests that he was able to take her along with him on occasions.
