Notes by Richard Oliver (grand-nephew) 1996:
At her birth her name was registered officially as Nellie. However, this was seldom used and she was universally known as "Nell".
I have a note about Nell Hallett which says: "born in a caul - her father took it to sea with him".
According to my Oxford English Dictionary, the correct definition of "caul" is: "the amnion or inner membrane inclosing the foetus before birth; esp. this or a portion of it sometimes enveloping the head of the child at birth, superstitiously regarded as of good omen and supposed to be a preservative against drowning".
This 1880 family heirloom, if that is the correct description, was still in the possession of Nell Hallett's daughter Frances Jackson (née Tyrrell) in early 1996.
Item from Nancie Oliver (née Hallett) letter to husband Jocelyn Oliver, 8th June 1944:
"You'll be sorry to hear Aunt Nell died on Wednesday - they suddenly found she had cancer & operated on her, but she didn't recover from it. It was a shock as she always seemed so well & hearty, though I don't suppose her odious children will mourn her a bit!"
