Based on the 1891 and 1911 censuses, Robert was born in Co. Down. Based on ages given on censuses and at death, would have been born somewhere between 1851 and 1854.
Not living with his parents in Bristol in 1871 census. Not found anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales, so probably still in Ireland (1871 census of Ireland is lost).[1]
Married Jane Hughes in Belfast in 1873. Occupation: grocer.[2]
They moved to Wales. They had a daughter, Henrietta Caroline, in Cardiff in 1875, and another, Elizabeth Jane, in Pontardawe in 1877.[3]

Jane died in Melton Mowbray in 1896.[6] Robert Married Sarah Corner in Melton Mowbray in 1897 - his occupation was hotel keeper.[7] In 1898, he was the proprietor of the Railway Hotel, Melton Mowbray.[8]
In the 1901 census the Robert and Sarah are living at 23 Burton Street, Melton Mowbray, and Robert is an agent for ales. Robert's children are not living with them - Henrietta married Herbert Benger in 1900, where the other three are I have yet to find - and two of his wife's relatives are staying with them.[9]
He was declared bankrupt in 1901. He had been a publican for about ten years, first at the Railway Hotel until it was demolished to build a railway bridge, then the Marquis of Granby, then the Boat Inn, but had lost money at all three.[10]
In the 1911 census, Robert is working as a butler for an American widow called Maragaret Zborowska at 15 St Audley Street West, St George Hanover Square, London. Sarah is still at 65 Burton Street.[11]
Sarah died at 61 Burton Street, Melton Mowbray, in 1934. Her death notice notes that Robert had been butler to the racing driver Count Louis Zborowska.[12]
Robert died at Coventry Cottage, Burton Road, Melton Mowbray, in December 1940. His son, Lt. Col. J. T. Halligan, was unable to attend the funeral due to his military duties.[13][14]
