Ellen (Halsall) Barker migrated from Lancashire, England to Australia.
Ellen Halsall (1840-1924) was born about September 1840 in Liverpool, Lancashire. She was the second daughter of a pavier (paver), Thomas Halsall & his wife Rachel Dyson.
[1]
They lived in June Place, Islington, Liverpool in 1841
[2]
but had moved to Park Road, Toxteth Park by 1851 when she had 3 younger siblings.
[3]
Her first child, Joseph Barker, was born on the 14th August 1857 and she married Joseph's father, also called Joseph Barker, a joiner, on the 1st September 1857 at St Peter's church, Liverpool.
[4][5]
3 weeks later, their son was christened at Pitt Street Chapel (Wesleyan Methodist) in Liverpool.
[6]
They moved into Poole Street, Toxteth Park where 6 months later, baby Joseph died and was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery.
[7]
A year later another son, Daniel, was born. He too was christened at Pitt Street Chapel. (Although the transcription states born Mar 1858, he was in fact born Mar 1859)
[8]
They moved to Collins Street, Toxteth Park where in January 1861 they welcomed a daughter Rachel but moved house shortly after and were on Whitfield Street, Toxteth Park in the 1861 census
[9]
Her husband died in early March 1862 and the baby, Rachel a few days later. Both buried in Toxteth Park cemetery.
Ellen and her older sister Elizabeth decided on get a fresh start and to emigrate to Australia. They boarded the "Donald McKay" in Liverpool about April/May 1863. Ellen was already expecting another child. They landed in Melbourne on the 29th July 1863
[10]
and stayed there a week before the final leg of the journey to Sydney aboard the steamer "City of Melbourne" on the 6th August. (The ages of the 3 travellers are all wrong but obviously them)
[11]
It only appears to be a trip of around 3-4 days and the baby, named Hannah, was born in the latter part of September so likely born in Sydney (although subsequent records state "at sea").
Ellen must have fallen on hard times and records show they were admitted to the premises of the Benevolent Society in Sydney. Ellen Barker, Daniel Barker 4 yrs & Hannah Barker 3 weeks all admitted on the 14th October 1863. Hannah died 11th November, Ellen left 21st November, Daniel left ? February 1864
A few years later, Daniel became ill and with Ellen not able to care for him, was readmitted by the Benevolent Society on the 26th October 1870. He was only there 5 days, being discharged on the 1st November. I suspect however that he was too ill for them to care for and was admitted to the Sydney Infirmary where he spent 33 days before he died on the 3rd December 1870 of anasarca (generalised oedema)
She set up home with George Hollister (although I don't believe they married) and was aka Hollister. She was living in Geelong from at least 1919 (possibly earlier)
[12]
moving to Bailey Place, Geelong before 1922
[13]
She died at the Benevolent Society Home in Ballarat on the 12th December 1924. Her death certificate was in the name Barker but shows aka. Hollister.
Her mother's name was correct but they misheard her father's name recording it as Hanson instead of Halsall.
