♪ Low Bridge ♫ by Thomas Allen 1905

I’ve got an old mule and her name is Sal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
She’s a good old worker and a good old pal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal

We’ve hauled some barges in our day Filled with lumber, coal, and hay
And every inch of the way we know From Albany to Buffalo

Low bridge, everybody down Low bridge for we’re coming to a town
And you’ll always know your neighbor And you’ll always know your pal
If you’ve ever navigated on the Erie Canal

We’d better look ‘round for a job old gal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal
‘Cause you bet your life I’d never part with Sal Fifteen years on the Erie Canal

Git up there mule, here comes a lock We’ll make Rome ‘bout six o’clock
One more trip and back we’ll go Right back home to Buffalo

Low bridge, everybody down Low bridge for we’re coming to a town
And you’ll always know your neighbor And you’ll always know your pal
If you’ve ever navigated on the Erie Canal

William W Halstead was born on an Erie Canal Barge

  • Definition of: Coxwain wikipedia.org & /ˈkɒksweɪn/, /ˈkɒks(ə)n/, Is in permanent charge of a ship (Person who steers a ship, now called Helmsman) "boat servant" since it comes from cock, a cockboat or other small vessel kept aboard a ship, and swain, an Old English term derived from the Old Norse sveinn meaning boy or servant. Authority / Directs all boat and crew activities. Responsibility: safety of the boat and the crew. They can only be relieved by the commanding officer, Executive officer, or senior officer present. The coxswain’s authority is independent of rank and/or seniority in relation to any other person on board the boat. Unlike the commanding officer (captain) of a cutter or ship, a coxswain does not automatically have command authority.

I saw on Ancestry a will for a Charlick K. Halstead from NY, will dated 17 May 1877. Wife listed as Phebe. Children listed as Eliza (Halsted) McConnell, Bradley Halsted, Emma Halsted, Alice Halsted, Sarah Ann Halsted, and Mary Halsted. It's possible I'm misreading Alice as a daughter when it's really his daughter-in-law. Point is, only one son is listed, and that's Bradley. It's quite possible that this William Halstead has different parents.
