Research Notes

Notes on looking for sources - The Elland baptism is the one used on many trees and is the same date as birth given. Blackley is about 10 miles from Midgley where James is said to be born. Middop is in Lancashire about 30 miles away. It may have been added because the father attached, Edmund Halstead, is said to be baptised in Lancashire and his Familysearch profile says he died in Little Middop, Lancashire.[4]

Marriage - no marriage found in Yorkshire for 1686 on Ancestry or Find my Past. The date given on many Ancestry trees is 5 October 1686 at Stepney, London, and the source attached is an "England, Select Marriages," entry which gives no surnames only James and Grace (who is a widow).[5] However the James seems to be a misreading of Thomas, as the original register entry reads "Thomas Fussill of Limehouse, Mariner, & Grace Spurrier, W(idow)" so clearly not this couple.[6]

There is a possible marriage at Halifax for this James on 22 February 1677/1678, James Halstead and Ann Bolton of Warley.[7] There may be more as Halstead is a common name in the area.

Marriage 1686 Middop, Yorkshire, England to Grace Courtney (1652–1756)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

I am truly amazed.

James Halstead is apparently my Great Grandfather and I never realized he even existed until about 5 minutes ago. Will wonders never cease?

Halstead-417 and Halstead-55 do not represent the same person because: It is the same person. For some reason, two duplicate merges are proposed. Only one is needed.
