NOTE: this apparently is not her family but her future husband, John D. JOYCE is living in the next farm with his family at age 20, and they will be married in 3 years. Also, her name and age is correct, so this is LIKELY the correct Jane. Why she is living there is unknown, but in someway it may be related to the budding relationship that will happen. The Alexander HODGES family can be found on familysearch.

Possible Parents: As Jane was born in Lowndes Co., GA and married there as well, it is likely that her parents also live here. The following are the other HAMs in this county listed in the 1850 US Census:
A William HAM, age 35 (1815), of GA lived in Lowndes Co., GA with: [12]
Martha A. HAM, age 25, of NC
Richard HAM, age 1 month, of GA
NOTE: UNLIKELY. Technically this William could be her father, having her at the age of 20, but his wife is too young, and it looks like they are just beginning a young family themselves. This more likely could be her brother or perhaps a cousin. He has a familysearch profile, which do not list his parents, only his wife, Martha MOORE.
A Thomas HAM, age 29 (1821), of GA lived in Lowndes Co., GA as a farmer with: [13]
Eliza C. HAM, age 27, of FL
Thomas C. HAM, age 1, of GA
NOTE: NOT POSSIBLE to be her parents as they both are too young. Again, probably her brother or perhaps a cousin.
A Richard G. HAM, age 34 (1816), of GA lived in Lowndes Co., GA. He was a teacher living with another farming family: [14]
Cader STEPHENS, age 44, of SC
Lavina STEPHENS, age 38, of GA (+9 children)
Catharine A . HAM, age 14, of GA (his daughter?)
NOTE: POSSIBLE. Here is another two HAMs living with another family! This Richard could be her father if he gave birth to her at age 19, and it looks like he also has a daughter a year younger than our Jane. A possible explanation is that this Richard may be homeless, forced to live with another family, but could only keep one child with him (or Jane was old enough to be a domestic.) This could be why Jane is with another family. The links below show that he was born in Liberty Co., GA in 1816, and then moved to Lowndes Co. as a teacher by 1850. (My proposal is that he was formally married to an unknown wife, and then moved to Lowndes Co, had two daughters, then became widowed or divorced. So by 1850, now in his mid-30s, we see him unmarried, living with another family.) He then married again to Sarah Crosby in 1854, had a short stay in Florida (1863) for the Indian Wars then back again to GA to Brooks Co. as a planter and then finally to Berrien Co. by 1869 as a farmer, where he raised most of his known 10 children. No sources found claiming Jane is his daughter. The following trees lists most of the known sources: familysearch tree, ancestry.com tree
