2. GOLDEN WEDDING; (1887) - Few of the many who start life are permitted to witness the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding, and receive the congratulations of friends. That the wish, "may you be happy" so often expressed on wedding days had been gratified, was the general feeling of a happy company, that on Tuesday of this week, met to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Wright, of Conway.
Amongst those present, in addition to the sons of the happy couple and their families, were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Neilson, of Williamsport, Penn.; Mr. and Mrs. Ham, of Kansas, Mr. John Ham, of Albany; Mr. and Mrs. Ham, of Sidney; Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Allison, of Adolphustown; Mr. and Mrs. Z. Ham and Mrs. E. Hooper, of Napanee; Mr. and Mrs. B. Detlor, of Hawley; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ham, of Conway; Rev. M.J. and Mrs. Bates, of Adolphustown, and Rev. W. R. and Mrs. Young, of Wellington.
A most delightful time was spent during the early part of the day discussing the scenes and incidents of the past. Mr. and Mrs. Wright being amongst the oldest residents of Fredericksburgh and closely connected with the business of the place in matters of church and state.
At 2 p.m. the company sat down to a most sumptuous dinner, to which ample justice was done by all present. Numerous and costly presents including two very handsome easy chairs, a beautiful gold clock, pair of gold trimmed spectacles, gold brooch, gold pens, gold goblets, fruit knives, large hymn book, etc., testified to the respect in which the aged couple are held. The baptism of two grandchildren, son and daughter of John Wright Esq., of Picton brought to a close and enjoyable and happy day.
If wishes could be realized one might be led to express the hope that Solomon and Azubah Wright may celebrate another golden wedding. We give some lines composed for the occasion by John Ham, Esq., of Albany, brother of the bride:
Just fifty years ago today A Solomon, not a King, Conquered all the other boys And captured Azubah on the wing. Azubah caught him on the fly. Heaven bless her soul today Solomon often thanked his stars That things did work that way. Now they're going down the hill, Yet side by side they stay, May they plod together still To Heaven's eternal day. And when the angels call them May they be side by side May he be Azubah's husband And she be Solomon's bride. (SOURCE: Anne Thomlison)
