Biography
Pieter Nicolaas Ham was born 17 Mar 1807 and baptized the same day at Nieuwezijds Kapel, Amsterdam. He was the son of Adrianus Pieter Ham and Johanna Reijnders. [1] [2]
On 11 Jan 1843 at Bennebroek, he married Alida Helena Nibbrig (age 37), daughter of Pieter Nibbrig and Susanna Cristhina Onnen. [3]
He was sent out by the society in Holland to minister to the emigrant farmers in Natal, South Africa, arriving on 8 May 1843. However, due to some political complications, the English authorities did not permit him to land. He proceeded to Delagoa Bay, Mozambique. and was dropped off with his wife, assistant, and the religious literature that was intended for Natal.
However, his wife and their baby succumbed to malaria, as did some parties who were trying to rescue the Reverend via overland trips. Eventually, a ship collected him by chance and this time and took him to Cape Town, where he spent some time recovering his health. [4] [5]
His abilities were recognized and he became the first resident clergyman of the Dutch Reformed Church, Franschhoek , [4] [6]
At Wynberg on 8 July 1846, he married the widow of John Maitland Esq. of the 4th Madras Light Cavalry. [7] [8]
In 1864, after 19 years of service at Franschhoek, he lived at Stellenbosch for a short time, before moving to the Willowmore congregration.
He passed away 19 Sep 1866 age 59 at Willowmore, completely exhausted from his attempts to spread the word via foot and horseback in the widely scattered community there. He was survived by his widow and three children: Henry Somerset MacKenzie, Johanna Susanna Reynders, and Adrianus Pieter Ham. [9] [5]
