Biography

No precise information is currently known regarding Charles Hambelton's birth. Some sources claim that he is Scottish,[1][2] but these claims are from later secondary sources that fail to provide primary sources for corroboration. His date of birth is approximate and based on his stated age at the time of his marriages. An estimate based on his burial record would have him born earlier, in 1762.

All three marriages were in Anglican churches. It is unclear whether that was his religious background or if it represented a compromise between the Catholic faith of his wives and his presumed Scottish and Presbyterian upbringing.

The first record of Charles Hambelton found in the Province of Québec is his marriage to Euphrosine Rollet. They married at the Metropolitan Church in Quebec City on 26 October 1795.[3][4] They had the following seven children, four of whom survived to adulthood.[5]

A widowed Charles Hambelton married Agathe Pépin on 30 May 1807 at the Cathedral Holy Trinity in Quebec City. Charles was listed as being a mariner of 41 years at the time of marriage.[20][21] He had the following children, both of whom died in infancy.

  1. Robert b. 1808[22][23]
  2. Jean Hector b. 1809[24][25]

Widowed a second time upon Agathe's death, he married a third and final time to Angélique Rollet. They married at Cathedral Holy Trinity on 5 March 1809. Charles is described as a mariner and keeper of the lighthouse on Green Island, aged 43 years at the time of marriage.[26][27][28] Together they had the following 10 children, six of whom survived to adulthood.[29]

Charles Hambelton is best remembered as being the first lighthouse keeper at Green Isle (Île Verte). He petitioned to become the lighthouse keeper during its construction, and took on the role once the lighthouse was completed in 1809.[2] The lighthouse at Île Verte is notable in that it was only Canada's third lighthouse and the first along the St. Lawrence River.[50] Charles Hambelton abjured his faith in favor of Roman Catholicism in 1822.[51] His burial record does not indicate the date of death, but later notarial records indicate that he died on April 14, 1827.[52] He was buried in Cacouna, Québec on April 17, 1827.[53]
