DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Augustin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Augustin:

I have uploaded several images taken from the book, "Wilderness Kingdom, Indian Life in the Rocky Mountains: 1840-1847; The Journals & Paintings of Father Nicolas Point", published 1967 by Loyola University Press, Chicago. This book is the compilation and translation to English of the journals and drawings and paintings of Nicolas Point, a Catholic Jesuit missionary who accompanied the Catholic priest, Pierre Jean DeSmet, as he traveled into Indian country to found the first Catholic mission in the Northwest. Nicolas Point was assigned the task of official diarist of the missionary party and he carefully recorded his experiences and observations in his journals. Nicolas Point was born and raised in Northern France. His journals are written in French. He would, therefore, have conversed with Augustin Hamel in their native language. I believe the many misspellings of "Augustin Hamel" was due to a language difference. English-speaking Americans just wrote what they heard. Nicolas Point, however, would have been uniquely qualified to provide the correct spelling of Augustin's name since he was a native French speaker. Therefore, I propose a change of last name at birth to Hamel.

I also uploaded a .jpg of Augustin's daughter, Cecilia Hamel Hunsberger's death certificate dated 1929. Her maiden name and her father's surname are both spelled "Hamel."

I agree. Also, I believe Hamel is the correct last name at birth. According to my mother's DNA matches, it appears we are related to an Hamel family from French Canada. I am currently trying to obtain sources to back this up.
