Tilly was born on March 24, 1785 in the the Town of Brookfield, Massachusetts, the son of Nathan and Abigail Hamilton.[1]
He moved to Madison County New York at a young age.
About 1816 in New York State he married Sarah Orcutt. They have a son Roswell.
In 1840 he was farming in the Town of Stockbridge, Madison County, New York.[2] The census recorded 5 males and 5 females; 3 employed in agriculture and 5 under two years of age and 4 in the 20-49 age bracket.
In 1850 the family was still farming in the Town of Stockbridge.[3] In the household was Tilla (64), his wife Sally (57), and Nancy Hamilton (22) and David Hamilton (19) who are not known as his children but probably close relatives. Also in the household is the family of Sidney (30) Rose and his wife Seropla (28), and their children Louisa (4), Jane (1), and Lilly (3/12); Sidney is probably Tilly's "hired man."
