Biography

Maria was born in 1753. She passed away in 1810.
Maria (Hamilton) Thompson was a convict on the First Fleet.

Convict on Lady Penrhyn arriving Sydney in January 1788 as part of thr First Fleet. Convicted at the Old Bailey October 1785 of stealing from a house, various clothing items, fabrics and money and sentenced to 7 years transportation.

Married Sydney Cove March 1788 to Jerry Thompson. NSW Marriage Reg 35/1788 V 178835 3A DIST CA.

Maria Hamilton is also known as Hambleton and her husband William was also recorded as Jeremiah Thompson convict Alexander.

A son Nicholas R Hambleton, alias Hamilton and Thompson, was born 1789 to Jeremiah and Maria. NSW Birth reg 57/178957 1A. Dist CA. In 'Children of Convicts & Mariners on 1790 Voyage HMS SIRIUS" By Cathy Dunn, he is Nicholas Richard Hamilton.

Fellowship 1st Settlers Assoc. Early Australian Colonial Database by Dr.C.J.Smee records 4 children born to Maria Hamilton and William Jeremiah Thompson:

  • Nicholas Richard born March 1789 Baptized 7th June 1789.
  • Elizabeth bapt March 1790 died 25th October 1860. Married Richard Allright-Shaw, both Colonial born, on 15th July 1818. Ages about 19 and 22 respectively. Note: age at marriage does not match birth date.
  • William bapt September 1793
  • Maria bapt 8th December 1794, died 9th July 1860

NORFOLK ISLAND AND ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT, 1788-1814, Population records for Children, record Elizabeth Hamilton (Hambleton) as above on NI.Her departure date is February 1805. WILLIAM HAMILTON Born NI Sept 1793 with no departure date, and Maria Hamilton Thompson born NI 8TH Dec 1794 departed February 1805.


HMS SIRIUS 1786-1790:

Arrived Norfolk Island aboard HMS Sirius March 1790, disembarking at Cascade Norfolk Island on 14th March 1790, along with their son Nicholas, recorded on Muster as Richard Hamilton.

By December 1791 they had settled on 12 acres at Queensborough, being Lot 91 and selling grain to stores by the beginning of 1793. William also leased an additional 15 acres recorded to him in November 1794 as Lot 92. (Lot 91 Land now located between Collins head and Balls Bay owned by Thomas Dixon 1796 and later sold to Robert Nash).

1802: A William Thompson, sentence expired departed stores 16 July 1802, with Maria Hambleton and 2 children. (Maria and Elizabeth?).

1805 A William Thompson died 26th July 1805, listed as a free man in the Rev Fulton burial records. Is this the correct William, given the 1st Fleet and Norfolk Island Memorial 'City of Edinburgh' list William Thompson and his wife Maria Hamilton, arrived Hobart Town 2nd October 1808 on the 5th Embarkation.

1807: Maria Hambleton free woman sentence expired, on stores from 22nd November 1807 for 40 days.

1808: Maria Hamilton free woman sentence expired on stores January 1808 to 31 August 1808.

Marim recorded in embarkation records left Norfolk Island aboard the City of Edinburgh in September 1808, credited with 8 pound for their property and buildings on N I.

There are conflicting records and uncertainty as to which convict William Thompson was. Convict of Alexander or convict Scarborough. One reportedly died 1805 and the other 1836 in Argyle St Hobart 1836.. [1]
