Biography

Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick had a precept of sasine upon a Service of Retour as heir to his grandfather Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick of the lands of Ballencrieff, Lanarkshire, dated 22nd April 1576, reserving his father's liferent.

He had a formal charter to himself, and his spouse Margaret Whitelaw in liferent, of the lands of Ballincrief dated 20th January 1581.(Douglas citing The Register of the Privy Seal book xlviii).

There is a charter implementing his [second] marriage contract (of 12th and 13th April 1592) to Christine, daughter of Thomas Hammilton of Priestfield. Dated at Innerwick 27th April 1592. A witness is James Hammilton in Innerwick.[1]

On 2nd August 1604 Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick was served heir to his father Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick in the lands and village of Eccles extending to 16 Husbandlands (416 acres) plus the dominical lands plus the mill of Eccles of the same acreage.[2]

Alexander Hammilton eldest grandson of [this] Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, and legitimate son of Alexander Hamilton of Fentoun, Knt., his (Innerwick's) son, by Elizabeth Ker (Fentoun's spouse) had his grandfather's estates settled upon him in fee in 1608 reserving liferents and income to the grandfather and his spouse Christine Hammilton.[3]

In the National Archives (GD206/6/23) is a Contract dated 17th Apr 1615 between Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick, kt, and Dame Christine Hamilton, his spouse, and others, on one part, and William Arnot of Cockburnspath, Margaret Home, his spouse and John Arnot, his son, on other part, relative to lands and barony of Cockburnspath. With related papers.

Alexander Hamilton, eldest son of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Fentoun, succeeded this Alexander, his grandfather, in 1641, having been nominated as heir to the estates under the settlements of 12th July 1608 and 16th April 1616, had attained 21 years of age before 30th January 1623.[4]

He married twice with issue to both wives.
