When Susannah Hamilton was born in 1753 in Abbeville, South Carolina, her father, Archibald, was 49.
At the age of 17, Susannah married John Henry Stephens. They had the following children:

Susannah made a declaration on April 8, 1844, in Gilmer County, Georgia, that her first husband Thomas Stephens had been killed by Indians in 1778. On 16 December 1778, she married Thomas Townsend in Abbeville. Thomas and Susannah had the following children:

In the first U. S. Census of 1790, Thomas Townsend is head of family in the 96th Abbeville District, South Carolina. The same census lists his father, Repentance Townsend as also living in Abbeville.
In the 1810 U.S. Census for Christ Church, Charleston, South Carolina, there were one male and one female between the ages of 26 and 45 in the Thomas Townsend family.
In the 1820 U.S. Census for Habersham, Georgia, the Townsend family were farmers. There was one male over the age of 45, one female over the age of 45, and one female between the ages of 25 and 45.
In the 1830 U.S. Census for Habersham, the Townsend family consisted of one male and one female between the ages of 70 and 80. There was one female between the ages of 30 and 40, and one girl between the ages of 5 and 10.
In the 1840 U.S. Census for Lumpkin, Georgia, the household had one woman between the ages of 80 and 90, one woman between the ages of 40 and 50, one woman between the ages of 15 and 20, and a little girl under the age of 5.
On March 4, 1843, Susannah was awarded Thomas's military pension of $80 per year. Susannah died on April 8, 1844, in Lumpkin, Georgia, at the impressive age of 91.
