Biography

James, son of James Hamilton & Nellie Baillie, was born on 10 Jun 1744 in , Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland.[1] James, son of James Hamilton & Nellie Baillie, was born or baptised on 10 Jun 1744 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland.[2]He was the son of James Hamilton and Helen Baillie.

He married Mary Nisbet (1747-1812) daughter of Archibald Nisbet of Carfin.

He is claimed to have passed away before 1812 according to THE HAMILTONS OF BELHAVEN [3] James Hamilton, second of Stevenston, born 10th June 1745. He was served heir to his father 16th October 1772. In 1783 he sold Stevenston. He married Mary, daughter of Archibald Nisbet of Carfin. She survived her husband, and died 30th March 1812, having had : — (a) Captain James Hamilton, died s.p. before his mother. (b) Archibald Hamilton, born 19th September 1774; died 23rd February 1823. He married May Clarke, and had twin sons, born 29th August 1822 : — James & Archibald Hamilton, died 30th September 1839 (c) Captain Francis Hamilton, died 10th December 1869. He was twice married, and left issue.

  • Archibald Hamilton 1774–1823 he was a surgeon 92nd Regiment in the army and married May Clark oldest son was James Hamilton (1822-1893) DEATH OF LORD BELHAVEN AND STENTON. It is with regret, that we announce the death of Lord Belhaven and Stenton, which took Place on Wednesday morning at his Edinburgh residence, Hamilton Lodge, Grange. His lordship has been in failing health for some time, having caught a chill last autumn. Born in 1822, Lord Belhaven was a son of Mr Archibald Hamilton, surgeon, 92nd Regiment. Upon the death of the eighth Lord Belhaven in 1860, he succeeded to the title, and a few years later he succeeded to the Wishaw estates. Lord Belhaven, being of a retiring disposition, did not came much before the public, but he took a warm interest nevertheless in Scottish affairs, and was an attached member of the Church of Scotland. Lord Belhaven was married in 1877 to Georgina, fourth daughter of Mr John Watson of Earnock, and is survived by Lady Belhaven and seven daughters. [4]
  • Captain Francis Hamilton 3 Nov 1783[5] died 10th December 1869. He was twice married, and left issue.
