Biography

James Hamilton was born about 1854.

It is not yet known how or when he arrived in New Zealand. The notes on his burial record say he had been in New Zealand for 30 years.

James married Harriet Maria Mills (1858 - 1935) on the 22 August 1878 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.^[1]

James died in June 1907, but there is a difference between sources as to exactly which date. The official New Zealand site has the 12 June. ^[2] The death notice in a local paper, which was published on the 11 June has the 10 June as his death date.

HAMILTON.—June 10, at his residence, 8, Madras Street, Sydenham, James, the beloved husband of Harriet Hamilton; aged fifty-three. So loved, so mourned.^[3]

Even the funeral notice was published before his "official" death date.

THE Friends of the late James Hamilton are invited to attend his Funeral, which will leave his late residence, 6, Madras Street, Sydenham on Wednesday, at 3 pm for Linwood Cemetery. GEORGE BARRELL,Undertaker and Embalmer. ^[4]

His grave at Linwood Cemetery is in Block 30, Plot 53. His wife will be buried in the same plot 26 years later.^{[5] [6]}
