He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. According to the application of Louisa, his widow, for his pension benefits, he served in the units designated as "Sgt. White's Acting Pa Engrs" and "Indpt. Co. (Smith's Acting Eng.) Pa Inf." On December 1, 1868, Thomas Francis Hamilton was sentenced to 10.5 years at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia PA as Prisoner No. 6190 for assault, larceny and burglary by a court in Lancaster County PA.

On May 15, 1869, he was transferred back to Lancaster County Prison. His occupation as a prisoner was listed as "Shoemaker." He died of typhoid on May 5, 1870, while still incarcerated at Lancaster County Prison.
