Martha Ann Elizabeth Hamilton Cary, (29 Jan 1849 - 29 May 1909) Age 60 A few source documents refer to her as Betty.
In 1867 in Nottoway County, Virginia, 18-year-old Martha Ann Elizabeth Hamilton married 31-year-old Samuel Joseph Cary Jr., son of Mary Ann William Farley Cary, (6 March 1806 - 3 Nov 1881) and Samuel Joseph Cary Sr. (8 Feb 1788 - 11 Feb 1864).
Martha and Sam Cary had alot of children. She told John Page, the enumerator of the1900 US Census in Amelia County, Virginia, that she had given birth to 13 children.
We do not know for certain the names of some of the children that died; there is no documentation for them. And there is always census errors; (misspelled names creates confusion, duplication and/or omission of children). The 13 names listed below were tabulated from US Census records, birth and death record and family historians that took the time to drive to cemeteries in Amelia County to document the gravestones.
Of the 13 children listed below 9 children, 5 daughters and 4 sons, survived to adulthood. The first nine children were born in Nottoway County; sometime after 1890 the family moved to Amelia County, where the last 4 children were born. In chronological order the 13 children are:
On 29 May 1909 in Amelia County, Virginia, Martha Ann Elizabeth Hamilton Cary died. She was 60 years old. Her remains were laid to rest on 31 May 1909 in St. John's Methodist Church cemetery, Amelia County, Virginia.
