Augustus was born in 1819. He was baptised in September at Old Meeting Hill Street in Poole, Dorset, England. Parents were James and Elizabeth Hamilton.
1845 - obtained Cert of qualification to practise as Apothecary.[1]
In 1850 he married Mary Eleanor Tebbett.
In 1875 Augustus emigrated to New Zealand on the Collingwood. He served as the ship's doctor and his son Augustus Douglas Hamilton acted as his assistant. During the voyage there was an outbreak of typhoid and 20 passengers died; Augustus and his son also fell ill. The stricken ship arrived at Wellington in July 1875.[2]
From a newspaper article in 1881: TO THE REGISTRAR OF BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND MARRIAGES, FOR THE DISTRICT OF NAPIER, HAWKE'S BAY, NEW ZEALAND. I AUGUSTUS PRIESTLEY HAMILTON, Doctor of Medicine, St. Andrew's University, Scotland ; Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England: Licentiate of the Apothecaries' Company, England, now residing in the Borough of Napier, Provincial District of Hawke's Bay, do hereby give notice that I Intend to apply to you on the second day of December. 1881, to have my name placed on the Register of Medical Practitioners in the Colony of New Zealand, and have deposited the evidence of my qualifications, along with this, in your office, for public inspection, in terms of "The Medical Practitioners Act, 1869." AUGUSTUS PRIESTLEY HAMILTON. Napier, November 1, 1881.[3]
He passed away in 1886.
