Biography

After a colourful career, James was affected by mental illness in his later years (as indeed it seems were several members of the family). He died without direct heirs and his title passed to his nephew, the 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, continuing from then to the present time as a subsidiary title of the Marquesses and later the Dukes of Hamilton.
