Family Tree of Ann (Hamilton) Carlton

Biography

Ann Jane Hamilton was born in about 1800.

She married Anthony Carlton, possibly born in nearby Brookfield, Johnstone. Anthony was a farmer.

Anthony and Ann had moved to Fermanagh, Ireland, by about 1827, when their son James Carlton (1820-1892) was 'in his youth', according to an obituary of a grandson Augustine Carlton (1861-1951). Most of their children married at St Mary's Catholic church at Ederney, and some of their grandchildren were baptised there.

According to Cross family history, Anthony and Ann had a son and 3 daughters who emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales (James, Bridget, Ellen and one other whose name is not known) and another son who emigrated to the United States (his name is not known).

According to family history recorded about her daughter Bridget Mary (Carlton) McGrath (abt.1823-aft.1877), Ellen and her Irish husband James McGrath returned to Scotland to say goodbye to family before emigrating from Greenock to New South Wales on the 'Percy' with James Carlton and his Irish wife Ellen Ryan in 1841. However, there is evidence that Anne and Anthony were still in Ederney then.

Anthony and Anne were the sponsors at their granddaughter's baptism in Ederney in 1853.[1]

Research notes

Could one of her son's be Charles Carlton (abt.1826-bef.1900)?

Could be related to Agnes (Hamilton) Cowden (1826-1910) of Paisley who migrated to New South Wales in the late 1840s or early 1850s and settled near Yass, close to where one of Anne's daughters Bridget Mary (Carlton) McGrath (abt.1823-aft.1877) settled at North Yass.
