Mary Jane was born in 1881 in Scotland. Her parents were John Hamilton and Helen Brown.[1]
She immigrated to Canada in 1888 at the age of seven.[2] Mary was one of the British Home Children, sent from the Quarrier Orphanage in Glasgow to their Fairkhowe Home in Brockville Ontario.[3]
She married William James Christmas in Kingston in 1903.[1]
William and Mary had the following children:
In the 1911 census, Mary and her husband were living in Kingston with their three oldest children. The household also included a Nellie Hamilton, age 18 and a Thomas Hamilton, age twelve. They are listed as sister in law and brother in law of William, suggesting that they are Mary's siblings.[4] Thomas is still with the family in 1921,[5] This would seem to contradict the fact that Mary Jane was listed as an orphan in 1888.
Mary died in 1974, living well into her nineties.[6]
