2. Family tradition as documented by Vivian Rush Riggin states:
"Dr. Robert Hamilton, a former surgeon in the English Army, and a lineal descendent of the Duke of Argyle; he being the younger son of the sixth Duke of the name; Robert James William Hamilton, who came to this country in the service of his King, George III, and fought with George Washington during the war of the Revolution, 1775-1783.
During the war, Dr. Robert Hamilton settled in Tennessee, and obtained 1,000 acres of land from an Indian Chief, for the red coat of an English army officer, namely himself, and a violin. King George confirmed the grant, which was afterwards ratified by the Commonwealth of Tennessee.
Dr. Robert Hamilton was a surgeon in the Colonial Army, during the Revolution, and before and when he acquired the land, he held a commission in the English army stationed in the Provinces.
Robert Hamilton, a son, married Polly Barnett of Virginia. They settled on this land that was purchased from the Indians, and which is in Hawkins County, near or on the Clinch River. The town of Rogersville being closest to this estate."

William Robert Hamilton, Jr. was the son of William Robert Hamilton Sr. and Margaret, unknown family name. He was born in about 1765 in Virginia, and died in 1830 in Hawkins county Tennessee. Robert, as he was known, and Sarah Bell Brandon were married in about 1788. Their family grew to include thirteen children: - Margaret, b. circa 1790, d. after 1860, married Ananias Cavin about 1810 - Catherine, b. 1792, married Curtis Walker about 1808 - Robert, b. 1794 - William, b. 1796, d. after 1860 - John Bell, b. February 1798, d. October 1862 - Thomas Robert, b. 1800, d. about 1840 - James Harvey, b.1802, d. after 1870 - Harvey M., b. 1804, d. about 1844 - Garret, b. 1806, d. August 1867 - Melvina, b. 1808 - Sarah, b. 1810, d. June 1847 - Jane, b. 1812, d. before 1849, married Solomon Goddard - Eliza, b. 1815, d. 1900, Married Isaac Cox about 1833

William Robert, Jr. left a will, and probably was buried on the family farm along the Holston River in Hawkins County, Tennessee.
