Obituary.
MR WILLIAM J. HAMILTON.[5] — The report of the death of Mr
Viiliam J. Hamilton was received
with a deep feeling of regret throughout
the town and district on Thursday
corning, as the sad event proved the
ermiuafcion of a young life through a
ery unfortunate accident. It will
ie remembered that a few days pre
viously—on the 18th inst, to be
jrecise—Mr Hamilton had been out
shooting with a pea rifle, which ha
jad unthinkingly brought home load
ed. He laid the rifle down for a few
minutes, and just when the servant
girl was haodiDg it to him again it
went off accidentally, and the unfor
tunate man wa3 shot through the
stomach. . The bullet passed through
the lung and the liver, and was
afterwards extracted by Dr Harris
from under the shoulder blade. A
consultation with Dr Bush was after
wards held, aod a hope was held out
for recovery providing no internal
complications took place. For a few
days everything went well, and then
a change for the worse set in, with
the result that a slight operation was
performed. The patient’s condition;
however, became more serious, his
relatives were sent for, and as a last
resource the assistance of Dr Hender
son, of Wangaratta, was secured.
Everything possible was done for the
unfortunate sufferer, whose life was
gradually ebbing away, but at 9
o’clock on Thursday morning Death
claimed another victim.
The deceased gentleman was a
well-known and popular resident, and
was a native of Butherglen. He was
the youngest son of the late D. G.
Hamilton, and only brother of the
Mayor, Cr D. Hamilton. He was
also a brother-in-law to Mr H. E.
Downes, of Main-street, and the
business premises of both these citi
zens were closed throughout Thurs
day and Friday. At all the stores
signs of mourning were displayed,
showing deep regret at the loss of kn
esteemed townsman. Mr Hamilton
remained connected with his late
father’s business until the estate was
disposed of some little time ago, after
which he became the owner of a
farm formerly carried on by Mr
Upton, and engaged in dairying pur
suits. He was only 38 years of age,
and was married eleven years ago to
a daughter of the late Mr G. Conis*
bee. His sorrowing wife and an
only son are leit to mourn tbeir sad
loss.
